Default Pro Defense Firearms / DOJ Taskforce

Two DOJ Taskforce agents showed up at my front door today regarding a Walther P22 that I purchased from Pro Defense in Redlands last year. According to the agents, Pro Defense was found to have a gun or two in their inventory that had a threaded barrel that could accomodate a silencer. They wanted to inspect my P22 to make sure that it was legal(which it was).

It was a very strange experience. I think the fact that they woke me up when they knocked on the door made the whole thing a little weirder. The first thought that went through my head was, "Damn, Obama's only been in office for a month and they are already here to confiscate my guns".

Glad it was ONLY for that.

Be glad they knocked, instead of knocking the door in with a swat team!

I was really ticked a few years ago when the DOJ sent me a letter telling me I had to send mine to SW to get the barrel FIXED... dang didn't know it were broke... now I don't have a switch barrel gun.. it is now "FIXED" as in one single 5 in config... I was steamed...

They sent task force to someone's house for a possible threaded barrel? No wonder California is broke.

How did it go? Did they ask to come in? Did they wait outside? Details... we need details.

They didn't have a warrant, but they assured me that if the gun did infact have the illegal part they were not interested in pressing any charges but they would have to confiscate it. They did not ask to come in, but after talking with them for a while I was fairly certain they were who they said they were so I invited them in. Probably not the smartest move, but I'm not trying to hide anything so whatever. They were very polite and left promptly.

There was another thread here with this video about your 5th amendment rights entitled "Don't talk to the police" by Professor James Duane. I can't seem to find it.

You can see the video here:

"Don't Talk to the Police" by Professor James Duane

I am very Pro-Police, and support law enforcement. I love cops, and I respect the job that they do. However, if they showed up at my door asking to see a gun of mine without a warrant, I'd have to politely tell them no, ask them to leave, and then call my lawyer before they got off of the porch.

just my .02

I feel similarly to your thought on LEOs. I think I'd want to verify who they were before I'd let them in my house since I don't have a clue what a DOJ Task Force badge or ID card looks like. As far as asking to see a warrant, I dunno that I'd insist on it, but I might ask them to come back after I'd woken up a bit and made a call to DOJ to make sure they were who they said they were, and maybe call the local PD to see if they could send someone by.

Maybe I'm not paranoid enough, but I think that's how I'd roll. Now if I had something to hide or they didn't pass the "attitude test", whole 'nuther story.

"Fairly certain they were who they said they were" ? Did they show ID or did you ask?

What a strange visit. I can understand why they would be looking for those people that purchased other firearms they found to have threaded barrels on them from that dealer. But I wonder if yours did have one, if they would actually just confiscated it and not charged you as well.

First thing they did was show me badges and I.D. cards along with a DOJ Division of Law Enforcement business card. They were able to describe the exact make and model of the firearm as well as the date and location where I purchased it. They also showed me photographs of the illegal firearms that they found with detailed close ups of exactly what they were looking for.

In retrospect, I should have been a little less trusting. I remember getting this feeling as I was letting them in that I really wished I had my carry weapon on me just in case. Anyways, I figured since I was unarmed at the time, had they been bad guys, they could have robbed me whether I invited them in or not. Once I opened the front door I made myself vulnerable.
