Angry Walmart & Ammunition sales

Hi All,

Sorry, I'm in mode, excuse the venting but take heed.

I decided to stock up on 45ACP for the event I have planned in June (which includes breaking in that Ultra CDP II I just DROSed on!). I knew from experience that Walmart had good prices on the 100rd WWB ammo (CCWI gave me the tip) and started calling around for availability. I did this because the last time I went in they only had one box on the shelf (luckily they found a 500rd carton in the back and got it for me).

Today when calling around asking for quantity I got universal confusion on caliber and quantity as expected, but a new twist from one store. The sporting goods department counter clerk informed me that he was not able to sell large quantites of ammo since the VT event. He said the last customer who asked for 500rds was detained and they called the cops (probably not true ). He wouldn't disclose how much they had on the shelf and when pushed on quantity he told me he would sell me no more than 300rds total (I wonder if he would have sold me a brick of .22LR ?) without managerial approval. The manager was not in today so I would have to wait until tomorrow if I wanted more.

While it seems we are certainly headed this way in this state, I was upset that the VT incident had any bearing on my ability to buy ammunition even when purchasing in person and fully willing to submit ID. I went to a different store and bought them out of the 800rds they had without a hitch. The inconsistent policy leads me to believe it was this particular counter clerk's own spin on what was 'good' vs. 'evil'. The fact that he was willing to sell 300rds obviously undermined his whole 'public safety' mantra. If he was serious he should have said no ammo sales at all.

Just for fun I went to this store and picked up the last 200rds of ammo I wanted. The guy behind the counter was selling 200rds of 40 S&W to the guy in front of me and was happy to give me what I wanted as well. He didn't even ask for ID and sent me on my way with a "Have a great day". I'm not sure if he was the safety nazi or not, but the point wouldn't be made there, I got their last two boxes on the shelf!

I wonder if anyone would have noticed if I tried to buy 1000 bottles of beer?

I just bought 17 boxes of Blazer Brass .45acp at the Walmart in Aliso Viejo, CA. (all they had)
I didn't have any problem at all. In fact, the gentleman asked if I needed help carrying it out to my car. (He didn't see that I had a cart ready).

On the way to the range Saturday I bought about 1,000 rounds at Wallmart in Orange off Tustin Ave. Actually they have a great crew there. By the way the Blazer Brass is about $4 cheaper per 100 rounds 45 ACP as compared to WWB.

I have been stocking up of late. At least 2 other times in the last 2 weeks I have bought over 1,000 rounds there. The guy is an actual sales guy and keeps saying "are you sure that is all? I can get you a case out of the back". And he is serious about it.

The troublemakers were in Brea. The guys who were helpful were in Buena Park. My only other experience was in Orange, and that sporting department counterperson insisted I take the single 100rd pack on the shelf even though I only wanted the 500rd case. He said he was too lazy to put it back so I had to buy it. I couldn't help but laugh and said I would take it. It was a good thing too, my Wife and I burned through all of it with CCWI and still had to buy 200rds more.

This is probably a case of an individual deputizing himself in the name of public safety. I also feel there is a possibility that these stores have individual governing bodies who are permited to smear the "Best Judgement" clause undoubtedly found sprinkled through every departmental proceedures handbook.

I should have told him I was buying it all up to destroy at a million mom march rally, he probably would have offered to carry it out for me then!

I like the arbitrary number of 300 rounds. I guess they figure if you are buying 400 or more then you are going to use it for something illegal, but 300 or less is okay.

I bought 2 boxes (100ea box) of #8 12gauge from HB Wallyworld (for Greg's shotgun class) and I had a similar reaction to the guy at the register. He said they were not returnable because Walmart feared they would be used for killing people. I said if I was going to use that on someone (yeah right, #8 shot!) the last thing I would be worried about is returning it. The look on the guy's face was priceless. I could tell he was anti-gun.

This is amazing! If they are monitoring ammo because of the VT incident then you think they would stop you at 30 or something. I mean. . you can do a lot of dmg with 300 rounds. . . you could use 2 bullets per target and still double the victims and have plenty of rounds left to off yourself like a pansy.

These are the perfect opportunities to write letters to corporate management. If I remember correctly, Home Depot instituted a policy whereby CCW by customers was not prohibited after many customers wrote letters about individual stores taking it upon themselves to put up NO CCW signs.

Good idea. I know in general Wallmart is CCW friendly. This sounds like an employee making their own policy. I wonder if upper management would like the fact that their sales staff is blocking paying customers from spending their money there.

Fabulous quote!

Apparently, the ammo is safer if you don't return it, but if it's returned to Wal-Mart then it'd be used for killing people. Makes you wonder if WM has a "high turnover". Heh.

I just bought 1000 rounds at the HB location without a second look. Sounds like the clerk is the problem.

The Long Beach (Carson/605) Walmart stopped selling ammo, told me over the phone that all LA County WMs stopped selling ammo.

Funny thing is I bought 800 rounds at a different Long Beach Walmart the next day without a hitch.

I think we just need to accept that there are some idiots working at Walfart
