Question... is it legal in CA. to purchase ammo via the internet? Follow up question would be... does it matter if the purchase is in state or out of state? I can't find the ammo I'm looking for in my neck of the woods up here so that's why I'm asking. Thanks for your replies.
Yes, it is legal. There are a few cities that local laws do not allow ammo to be shipped. I believe they are Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento and San Francisco. Most of the online retailers are pretty astute as to where they can and cannot ship. And it does not matter if the retailer is located in state or out.

+1... I just received an order from MidwayUSA yesterday and I live in Kern County. Check the local laws for your county.

Yes, you can buy ammo online and have it shipped to California. There are a few cities that don't allow it though. Sacramento is one of them. When you order they ask your zip code and will let you know if it's a go.

I just bought some 7.62x39 from SurplusAmmo and got it in 3days....

Always seems weird to me that my neighbors can't buy ammo online and their local Walmart doesn't carry any. Glad I'm not in the city of Sacramento.

Discount Guns for Law Enforcement by Buds Gun Shop (budsgunshop.com)

They're pretty liberal when it comes to defining who qualifies for the prices.

FWIW: 180gr FMJ 40S&W 500ct $.308/round, shipped.

This post has been running well over a year and I’m not sure if my choice is mainstream or not, but I get ammo from Cabela’s. I’m not going to quote prices, but I suggest you check their prices before your next purchase. Cabela’s doesn’t charge tax for CA purchases and if you use a Cabela’s Club Visa for the purchase, shipping is free (regardless of quantity) through Dec 31. I’m hoping they decide to extend the free shipping deadline. They have sales all the time and notify you via email. Lawaia is right; this would make a good sticky for future reference.
