Default Rand Study of NYC Police Firearms Training

A new Rand Corporation study of the NYPD firearms training and performance, and their recommendations, including a discussion of the dreaded point shooting subject. CCWInstructor will have fun with this one.

I thought that this was an interesting observation by the HIGHLY paid Rand Corp:

...shooting at paper targets on a known-distance range does not demonstrate that the officer has mastered his or her firearm and is ready for a shooting confrontation on the streets.

Yes, they got paid for this major insight!

The method that they advocate seems to be using your "trigger" finger (the finger that was formerly your trigger finger) as if it were an invisible laser sight, letting it lay along the frame of your pistol, and letting your mind "naturally" point the finger, and the gun at the same time - while your new trigger finger, which is what used to be your "Finger" finger (or middle finger) is used to press the trigger. There are some obvious problems with this, but I am sure that Rand would be able to iron those out if they proceed to a phase II study.

I predict that CCWInstructor will be incensed by the nature of the study and Rand's approach. I think I have heard him say that point shooting has an appropriate place in the pistolero's skill set, but that your Middle Finger should be reserved for communication purposes.
