Default 8hr class before or after CCW app???

At exactly what point in the CCW process does Placer County require proof of training?

I have searched forever and found too many different answers to this question so I have decided to ask everyone. Specifically those who have recently attained their CCW in Placer County or those who have a deep and certain knowledge of their current laws. On the official Placer website (http://www.placer.ca.gov/Departments...res%20pdf.ashx) number 4. says "applicant is required to present a certificate of firearms training for carrying a concealed weapon, 832 PC, Police Academy of equivalent firearms training. Applicant must demonstrate competency in handling, loading and unloading of the weapon." I am not sure at what point the applicant must present the cert. After approval for further processing? When I drop off the application. There is a specific sticky (http://www.calccw.com/Forums/general...ts-ca-ccw.html) that states the applicant needs not get training "until the application has already been submitted" but the Placer County website seems to indicate differently. <sigh> So guys, which is it?

To be most confusing, and yet accurate... the agency determines which way to go. Some require that the training be completed prior to submitting the app, some want to give you conditional approval before you take the training.

Are there multiple agencies within Placer County? If so, which one/s do not require training prior to application?

If you're in Rocklin, check with Rocklin PD to see if they issue. Otherwise, go to the Placer County Sheriff's Department. I'm assuming you live in Rocklin...

Got it. I'll check tomorrow morning. Assuming both issue, would it be better to apply at one location or another?

Thanks for the help.

If Rocklin PD issues, apply there first. You could apply to the Sheriff's Department first, but doing so (in the event Rocklin PD issues) wouldn't be considererd "good form"... and could be a source of friction between the two departments...

If the PD doesn't issue, they will just direct you to the Sheriff's Department.

Basically, you want to play nice and follow the "rules" that have been setup for your county.

I shake my head at how much the members here know. Thanks for the info and I'll check with Rocklin PD first and get whatever other information I need from them.

Regards,

Sig

This is a common issue among the 58 counties. I don't know exactly how the Cities in Placer County work with the Sheriff's Department in this matter, but generally, it's considered "good form" to go your PD first, give them first right of approval/denial, and then to your Sheriff's Department if need be... if you live in an incorporated City. I live in an unincorporated area... so in my case, I'd go straight to the Sheriff's Department.

So just to verify, Placer is an incorporated city? ... How did you know this?

Placer is a County. Unless it's inside an incorporated city or town, the land of that county is going to be considered "unincorporated" as it's not within a city or incorporated town.

Here's a link to a list of the six Incorporated Cities and Towns in Placer County:

Great. That clarifies things for me a little.

I do not believe Rocklin PD issues, but it doesn't hurt to check.

As for the training, you must take the training before applying. In Placer County you do not just "drop off" your application. You schedule an interview, which is when you will turn in the application and present your training certificate.

Also in Placer, there is no "approved for further processing" notification. Every thing is done all at once (Interview, Application, Good Cause, Live Scan, etc.).

There are several Placer County approved trainers that I can recommend. Let me know if you need contact information for any of them.

Mr. AuburnHunter, thank you for providing this info. Every county is a bit different, as you well know. I hope that between the two of us, we put S&F on the right track.
