Default So I'm at this Home and Vehicle Defense Class at Thunder Ranch this Week

Ok...
So the instructor is under THE instructor for the week. Class has been interesting. Clint is in rare form and obviously in a good mood. We, the wife and daughter and I, have shot about 1500 rounds. The XD 45 Tactical with the 24/7 sights has been running like a top. I have not shot the gun this much at any sitting and while I have previously put 500+ rounds through the thing and have carried it for about a year, I haven't put myself under pressure while using the gun. The class has alot of fairly new shooters and the collective skill is somewhat lower than the last class I took here, but we have done alot of skills drills and Clint is really a good motivator. He took the time to talk to both the wife and I about things we could apply as instructors. He keeps us in mind when he is making a point and then will come and talk to us privately about applying the learning point. When little ole me made a mistake...He made sure to apply the lesson with the group and individually.
Tommorrow we will be shooting from the cars and in the house. As a probation officer I search houses alot so this is definately a tuneup I am looking forward to and while I work out of my car for 8 hours a day and I am looking forward to getting the info...
I have put together some notes that I am going to apply to my CCW class that I teach and the department I work for.
Will update after class tommorrow or on Saturday.

It's Saturday. I arrived home at about 0300 and the truck took a "dump" about a block from home... bearing seized or the brakes froze...somethin'... but I limped home. Glad it didn't happen in like... Santa Nella or someplace.

Thunder Ranch was a great experience. Fired about 700 rounds in 3 days doing a variety of drill's. Basic to one of Thunder Ranch's courses is fundamental drills... lots and lots...good shooting is, after all said and done, all about fundamentals. We shot from cars, shot in the "terminator" (shoot house), shot from the deck, shot moving, shot standing, shot moving alot more, and then shot moving again. This was all the sorts of stuff I was looking forward to. Clint took me aside numerous times to make points salient to instructors in an effort to help me be a better trainer... much appreciated Clint...Clint has good sense of humor and was rapid fire-non-stop in the running lecture kinda way...with everyone...we had at least one complete novice on the range and several of the more experienced type folks...

A guy from like...Mendacino...shot the whole couse with a Kimber UC II until it took a dump on the last day..... mag release button wouldn't... and Clint loaned him a custom Springfield Govt. model to finish out the day...

So... would I suggest the reader go to Thunder Ranch and "just" work on fundamentals?
Ummm....sure...Da...no joke...of course...etc....

I shoot alot...like alot alot...and get lots of free ammo from my department to better myself as an instructor...but there is something about having another instructor look over your shoulder and offer suggestions to make you a better shooter...of course I made some amateur mistakes... several... which is part of what makes the experience so beneficial.

I think the best endorsement I can think of is this, We scheduled to take another class next year...

Integrated Handgun & Urban Rifle Course

Course Description
This course allows the student to participate in an integrated program that will stress the practical and defensive use of the handgun and rifle with strong emphasis placed on the two systems being integrated together as might be required in conflict.

Each firearm will have limited coverage as a separate platform to assure or confirm student skills with the remainder of the course time spent using the two systems together. Included are range and tactical house exercises using both systems.

Additionally tactics and illumination equipment use with handheld and or gun mounted lights for each firearm will be covered.

....Maybe we will see some of you there!

Thank for the report.
Can you elaborate a bit on the shoot-house? Did you use frangibles? Night scenarios?
Thanks again and glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. TR is still on my wish list.

Thunder Ranch has what is called the "Terminator". It is a two story house with lots of rooms and doors and special target frames that allow the target to drop when hit well... but not if hit poorly. The house is like any other house on the inside... wood walls that bullets go through so you have to be careful in how you engage a "threat" but with concrete filled block as an outside wall on three sides... the 4th side is facing a mountain and is a "no go" zone.... Light levels can be set to various levels and there are shadows everywhere... I used my light in the "lit" scenario anyway... which is what I do when I go into a house searching for probationers/parolees/etc....cause there are dark corners and I have found people hiding in incredibly small dark corners...closests....cupboards etc...so I train it like it's real...

All ammo at Thunder Ranch is frangible.. green stuff... it is the future so we might as well get used to it. If I was going to open a range in this current political environment... it would be a green range.. period... I've owned a regular range and the lead clean up is... well .... a problem...

If you want to go... go now...I'm not sure how long he is going to be doing this and the trend seems to be that he is scheduling fewer classes... You need the 500 bucks for the deposit... a 1000 rds of 45 was about 400 bucks shipped... and then there is hotel etc.... we drove up and back in one day but you can also schedule a fishing trip or whatever as part of a vacation...

In many ways, Clint Smith is one of the movers of the training industry. He was there when there weren't too many people there... he pioneered much of what modern rifle training is about and his urban rifle course is legendary. He is though... all about fundamentals...training, in my opinion is fundamentals practiced... which is why I like Clint smith.... he agrees with me

Thank you sir. You feedback is appreciated.
I have never met Clint Smith, but I believe he is 'old school gunsite' and I mean that in avery positive way. I would be honored to take one of his classes and actually inquired with a friend when Clint was still in Texas. We were too late for Texas and Oregon was not open at the time. We ended up going to Gunsite and had a great time.
Stay safe.
