Change of Shooting Platforms Question

Hi Gang,

I have been a recreational shooter for many years and was a CCW holder in Georgia during most of that period. I have used 9mm platforms (Sig P226, P228, Glock, etc) almost exclusively for most of that period. (insert Tuppleware jokes here)

I also have long time reloading experience on those platforms...

Cutting to the chase, I have recently started shooting again at the once or twice a week pace and will be pursuing my OC CCW. I have also picked up an interest in the 1911 platform. I just acquired a Kimber Tactical Pro II and been getting used to it at Evans.

I'll be taking CCWI's Basic Class I in a couple weeks to re-affirm and re-learn what I "think" I know and realize what I don't!

My question...I was curious as to the CalCCW members thoughts on using CCWI's class as an opportunity to learn and train on the 1911 platform for these purposes or am I better off continuing on the 9mm platform, since I have such familiarity with it? Since CCWI's class is "basic", assuming little or no knowledge on handguns, I thought I could perhaps this would be a good opportunity to train from the ground-up on the SA 1911. Thoughts? Comments? Warnings?

I think it's a fine place to practice and adapt.

I took CCWI's basic class with a Glock .40. I just took his intermediate class, did the first 100 rounds with a .357 K frame, the second with a small 1911. I haven't settled on "the One" for my CCW and was pleased to see that most of the "hard wired" reflexes were left over from when I learned.

Use any type of gun you are comfortable with, both CCWInstructor and his assistants are well versed in all types of guns--you must be comfortable with your personal weapon, despite our friendly kidding about 1911 vs. plastic guns, either can be a good choice, a lot depends on your personal preferences. You will need spare mags if you use a semiautomatic, and spare speedloaders if you use a wheel gun, but either way you will increase your proficiency in defensive handgun use. Enjoy!

The lecture is basic, on the range you wil be doing double taps, triple taps and multi-target drills. I prefer the "O" frame platform. You already know the 9mm, learn on the platform you aren't famalier with.

After spending some quality time with the 1911 lately at Evans, I'll use the Kimber next week with CCWI....yippee!
