I think the response to an AD probably has to do with the guy handling the gun and his attitude. The only few that i've seen, the guys probably should have been flogged in the public square, but I'm guessing you've seen guys that were very contrite.

I had an elderly gentleman.. .who is normally a very good shot with his 1911... turn and place the muzzle of the gun against my breastbone, finger on the trigger, hammer cocked, and loaded...safety off... and ask me why the gun did not fire...
I gently and quickly placed my thumb over the hammer and placed the safety on... he never said a word at that point but turned very white when he saw what he had done... became visibly shaken ... I had him sit on a bench and we finished the qual... afterward we had a talk.. he beat himself up more than I ever could... and he finished his qual... I don't believe he ever renewed his permit after that... can't say I blame him.. I'd have been mortified... he was...
Most of the people who commit safety violations on the range.. never argue and they have a good attitude... contrite is a good word...

I had a relative who shot his thumb off with a .410.. he could have spent his life feeling like a dumb ...whatever... or he could do what he did... which is to talk to kids about gun safety...That's my goal when I see a violation... turn that person into a gun safety evangelical...
