Default Loaning out a handgun

I work with a nurse who is enrolled in a handgun safety course and intends to work towards her CCW.

She does not own a pistol of her own and wishes to get in some additional practice.

Any do's or don't's I should be aware of before I agree to loaning out a firearm?

If she is a beginner I would suggest going with her to the range. I'd personally be somewhat hesitant to loan a firearm to a person with limited experience.

Nothing really special about loaning a firearm to somebody. Just make sure she knows how to transport it legally. Also, if you have large capacity magazines, you cannot loan them to her unless you are present then whole time it is in her possession.

I have loaned out guns, mostly to my brothers and my dad, but to a friend or two on occasion. I am kinda on Rycerz side, if they are new to shooting I would want to go with them or know who's class they are going to be in so that I knew they would have proper oversight.

Most instructors will provide guns for the newbies if you ask them, check with the guy doing the class and see if he has one available to loan her for the class. That takes you out of the loop, and (in theory) leaves it in the hands of the professional teaching the class.

Be carefull

12078.(d)(1) Subdivision (d) of Section 12072 shall not apply to the infrequent loan of firearms between persons who are personally known to each other for any lawful purpose, if the loan does not exceed 30 days in duration and, when the firearm is a handgun, commencing January 1, 2003, the individual being loaned the handgun has a valid handgun safety certificate.

Just me, I would never loan any of my guns to anyone if I was not going to be there.

Or at least wipe it down thoroughly before loaning it to that person!

As instructors, we always provide firearms for those enrolled in our classes if we are asked ahead of time. This allows us to tailor the firearm to the individual, as he/she is shooting... we can change guns at will. We bring a variety of guns and charge a set fee for ammo... They are allowed alot of .22lr and we bring several guns, then allow them to try a few rounds through various firearms... we are always amazed at how you can start a newbie off right and then watch as they progress...to a freekin' 45 ... husbands watch your ammo budget... the XD 45acp has, over and over, prooven to be a favorite gun for our female students... when they have worked up to it!

We never loan a gun to anyone except when we will be there with them... besides, if it is with friends we find ourselves then better friends we are when we are leaving the range!

I once took a female newbee to the range for the first time, started her with a Ruger 22 auto. Over 3 hours she worked up a step at a time to a S&W 29 6" with full load hunting ammo. She started out without any bad habits or misconceptions from the movies - she didn't think she already knew how to shoot.

(of course, when shooting the .44 it helped that she was 6' tall and shaped like FI)

Click on FI's profile, photo on the right. She's standing next to Sheriff Jack Anderson from OCSD. 36 hours after he got sworn in.
