Default Mission accomplished

I had the family at Greg's basic handgun class today and accomplished my mission, thanks to Greg and his excellent staff.

I have been around guns before and am comfortable enough to be able to hit what I aim at. My wife and 20 y/o son, not so much. I took my son to Front Site in Sept to at least get him used to handling a gun and he did well. He doesn't have any preconceived notions about what a gun should or should not do. He listens well and performs the actions required by a firearms instructor to handle a gun safely and effectively.

My wife, however, is another story. She has an attention span as long as a car accident and likes to take shortcuts and scrimp on everything she does. Since I got my CCW she has expressed interest in being able to carry a weapon of her own for protection. She has not been around guns very much and is still a little anxious around them.

I have taken her to the range a couple of times but she has been resistant to handling and shooting the weapons. I told her that she needed to handle a few different styles and calibers to see what she is comfortable with so that I can buy a pistol that she would be comfortable enough to carry. I at least got her to experience enough to know she wanted a small framed .380 automatic.

I bought her a Bersa Thunder last month but it was my judgement that I did not have the patience to teach her to handle the weapon safely. So I signed up with Greg for the 3 of us to go. The goal for the day was to get her more familiar with weapons and comfortable with handling and shooting them. Well we went through 250 rounds and I can say it was a resounding success. In the truck on the way out of the canyon she told me that she is now comfortable with shooting the gun.

So I would like to publicly thank Greg, swdr, and DVSmith for a great experience. I have serious doubts that I could have gotten her so much experience and made her so comfortable with her weapon. Both of them even took the HSC test and got there cards. So now I can get my son a great birthday present in May and I can get the wife started on her application for CCW.

Mission accomplished.

Keith

ETA: I think I got jipped though. Didn't get to see the lime green speedo, maybe because it was a little chilly.

I too took Greg's class today, we had to police our brass and since I'm fat and lazy I've been looking at this has anyone ever used or seen one of these? Is it worth it?

Brass Wizard™

Cartridge Case Pick-up Tool

$44.95

The Brass Wizard™ is designed to make gathering your spent cartridge cases efficient and easy ... as well as saving your back in the process. The Brass Wizard™ quickly picks up most centerfire metallic pistol and rifle cases, and shot hulls. I've even used it to pick up .50 BMG brass!

Just roll the Brass Wizard™ over the cases and they pop into the basket! It picks up brass from sand, dirt, grass and hard surfaces. It will hold about 25 to 35 cartridge cases, depending on size, before needing to be emptied.

Dumper Accessory Included!
Each Brass Wizard™ comes with a "Dumper" accessory. The Dumper is a wire bracket that attaches to the rim of a bucket (bucket not included) and allows for easy and fast emptying in just seconds. Just lower the Brass Wizard™ down over the Dumper, give a little twist, and the cartridge cases will drop into the bucket. In the photo at left, the Dumper is on a 2 gal paint bucket.

They also make a shell sorter.

I too was at the class yesterday. Sorry Im lazy and came home and went to bed. I don't get up at 5:45 for just anything you know

Here's MY review....#1, there were people there from ALL age groups and walks of life and firearms experience. One guy brought this son and 2 daughters, and they were a hoot. Seriously. LOL.....

#2. The first portion in the classroom was graciously short, but succinct as well. Covered all the important stuff without going ridiculously slowly. Grip stance, safety, etc was covered in about 30 minutes or so... Think the most part of that was Greg's background...LOL...Wish we had a more qualified instructor...JEEZ!!! hehehehehe... Um, note to self....KNOW which eye is dominant before entering that room.... And, um, don't dye my hair blonde...LMAO!!

#3 the round count and time spent on the range was just about perfect. 250 rounds in about 2 hours WITH TIME FOR ME TO SMOKE!!!! YES!!!! Greg is my hero and I now have a shrine in my house...

#4 THe drills were very simple as they should be for a beginning class, but not so simple it wasn't fun! The guy next to me and I were trading barbs becuse our stupid stickers wouldn't fall and we had little hanging chads. TOO Funny...Had to be there I guess, but we laughed our butts off! AND looking down the range, both ways mind you, with the help of staff, EVERYONE wa shooting really well after about 10-15 rounds!!! Pretty amazing stuff to see and the confidence that grew when doing rapid fire 6-shot strings and seeing them hit for the super newbies there was really cool.

#5 The legal portion covered after range time probably could have gone on forever, and I think it did even after I left, but again, info was short, sweet and to the point without getting thrown too far off track even on the What if's....Nicely done.

Some things to remember. If you show up early, chronically, and try to be prepared, DO NOT BUY THE RANGE'S AMMO!!!!! Wait for Greg and get it from him...GRRRRRR.....I cannot tell you how gummed up and cruddy my poor gun was when I got home....The reloads FUNCTIONED fine, but accuracy and dirtiness were abysmal. Also, HYDRATE....It wasn't warm by any stretch of the imagination, but working on the range does take it out of you and hydration is important. Given the choice between hydration and nicotine though, I'll still take the nicotine. Don't be the guy next to the Berreta. LOL....Brass in the chest sucks. LOL

This is a GREAT class to take even if you've been shooting a long long time as it is a basics class and its always good to get back to the basics and redevelop good habits (45 degree angle 45 degree angle 45 degree angle....Cripes!) that yo may not even be aware that you have lost.

All in all, a great day at the range. Got to meet lots of people from this forum, can't remember all the screen names....Dangit. And of course, during the summer, you may get a glimpse of Booger in the green speedo.

The shell sorters are great! The brass picker upper picks up all the rocks too. Both models have been tried.

Get me a brass magnet and you can stop picking up brass.

OOPS!! Sorry Julie. Yes Julie was there is a lovely, beautiful lady. She helped us all get checked in and helped swdr and DV Smith with target set-up/tear-down. She helped on the shooting line and was instumental in making the day a success for everyone. She also helped proxy the test for my son and wife to get the HSC card. Did I mention how beautiful she is?

Please don't send Chuck around!

Or The Duke for that matter.

This quick read made my decision for me. I have been an avid shooter as a wee-one with my father and since living with Mom for the past 12 years I lost alot of my feel/knowledge for firearms. I just recently made my first purchase and am awaiting my 10days to end .. however I was looking for a "refresher" in a fun environment and it seems I just found the place!

Maybe I can find a new adoptive father for me and my new sig while out there!

Welcome aboard zerokilla!! Good to have you here. Since you are from the OC you should try to get to the Craig Hunter gathering this Friday. He may help everyone in that county to get back some of their 2A rights. Good luck with the process. If you do take a class with Greg you won't be disappointed.

Yes, ammo. Also, do NOT go to the range office and buy their ammo. If you don't bring your own CCWI will have some to purchase for a nominal fee. The range charges a lot more than he does and CCWI brings ONLY WWB. You will need 250 rounds for the Basic Handgun.
