Default Range checklist

I am new to guns and have never been to the range solo. Is there a basic checklist of things I will need for the range? Help a brother out, I know it sounds basic, but that is where I am starting.

Outdoors or indoors?

Handguns or long guns?

I like to take along some of those hand cleaner towlettes, like they give you when you have BBQ at a restaurant. Nice to clean the lead residue off before I eat or drink anything. And make sure you save some ammo for the drive home, just in case.

some ranges also have a "bring your own gun or bring a friend" rules forced on them by insurance companies...

Guns

Nothing more frustrating than opening your lock box to find that you are at the range, loaded mags, targets posted and no gun in the box. It happened to me - opened my Secure-It box only to find that there was no gun inside (it was in my safe in the bedroom). Now my wife asks me if I have my guns with me before I walk out of the house.

You mention that you are new to guns. Maybe you should include someone that is not "new to the game", or some quality firearm safety training / firearm familiarization.

There are a lot of qualified firearm instructors that can teach you the basics of safety that will give you a sound foundation before you spend any time on a range with others.

After getting some good firearms safety instruction under your belt, review the lists above and let your experience and wallet be your guide.

I agree. My buddy is a Sac county Sheriff, and he is going to go with me, but I didn't want to show up with just my gun some ammo and nothing else. He has given me some "training" if you will, but I didn't ask about things to bring to the range, so I figured I'd ask the masses.

If you are bringing handguns don't forget the keys to the locks on the gunrugs. Trust me!

Bonovox uses a universal key. It works on all locks:

No joke. I went shooting with a guy a few weeks back. He drove over half an hour to shoot with a few of us. Goes to whip out his expensive, tricked out Kimber and found he left the key for his gunlock at home. We tried every gunlock key we had between the four of us but no luck. I could have charged him a nice rental fee on a pair of bolt cutters if I had them.

I don't use those gunlocks for locking guns up. My gun cases have nice pad locks and I stash the keys all over the place including with my truck keys just in case. Worst case scenario I could buy another pad lock with the same number on it and get a key. Those gun locks are all different though and it drives me nuts. I do use one though, to lock up a gate on the farm. Works good for that!
