Default Training

OK, so while I"m not necessarily a bad shot, I'm not a great shot either. I got back into guns just over a year ago (used to shoot as a kid with my uncle). Anyways, since then I remembered a lot of things, figured out a lot of things on my own and in process also I figured that I picked some bad habits as well.

Anyways, I have taken some classes in the past from Greg Block @ Firearms Training and I figured that since Basic Handgun is coming up I should probably consider taking it. Cost for the class was extremely reasonable (prices are on his website) and the class fit my schedule. It was broken up into Basic Handgun I and Basic Handgun II and I took both of them. During the course of the class I got better and I confirmed one of my bad habits: I have issues with smooth trigger pull (ok, gotta dig out my snap caps again). Also during the class I had a chance to practice double tap and tripple tap drills. I was pleasanty surprised to see that even with double taps or tripple taps I still was capable of hitting the silhouette. Towards the end of it I was for the most part even capable of hitting a 3"x5" card with double taps (ok, first shot usually hit the card or close to it second shot every so often the card, but mostly close to it). Easy you say? I say nay nay The 3x5 inch cards were numbered and they was 4 of them. The way drill went was that you had your firearm pointed at a belt buckle area and then when a number was called out you'd bring the gun up and aim and double tap at the 3x5" card with that number.

Overall I have went through 450 rounds in that class, had fun, and learn some new things. My trigger control got better a bit, I gained some confidence in regards to double taps and I have identified things I need to work on.

Now I"m trying to see where on the schedule can I fit the rest of the classes Greg has to offer.

Many Thanks to Greg, Julie and two assistant instructors: Chuck and Bruce.

One more thing I forgot to add (and I'm going to blame my overly oxygenated brain) is teaching style. I have known Greg for over a year now and I have to say that he is an impressive instructor. How so you might ask... well, for one he is passionate about the subject he teaches, he likes doing it and he's just great at it. I have taken a lot of classes throughout the years in various areas (computers through music through welding..... heck, if I like something I'll probably take a class in that area sooner or later). I also have went fairly far in the schooling system as well as taught various courses at college/university level as a guest lecturer, faculty assistant and I also currently teach at the place I work at (offer some trainng classes to employees). Anyways, what I am getting at is that Greg posses a very unique skill which is IMHO extremely rare. He is capable of keeping the students entertained, on their toes, interested and learning all at the same time. Here's an example: the Basic Handgun course starts with class lecture which covers material that I know pretty well. It's material that I have known for a while. Some of it is common sense. What does that mean, it means that folks probably don't pay attention to it? WRONG! I found it as educational as the first time I came across that information and it was entertaining. The entertainng factor is very important as that is what helps you RETAIN the information much better.
That skill has made the class worth every penny and then some (heck, you ask me, he undercharges)......

And now.... back to Hoppes #9 fumes as I'm cleaning my O-frame

Default Great Class

Just adding to what everybody else has already said.

Books are good. Range time is good. Dry firing is good. Mental prep is good.

It is all good but where else do you get the chance to double tap, triple tap and unload...while being watched and corrected by experts?

I saw myself rapid fire 6 shots into a tight group, which I wouldn't have believed possible.

At the end of the day my wrist hurt, I had blisters, I was done...but it was great.

I learned tons; about myself, about the skills of shooting and about Greg Block.

I'm not trying for brownie points, but what struck me was the fact that Greg truly loves what he does. It especially shines in his willingness to share his knowledge and expertise with everybody, like in these forums. His enthusiasm became my enthusiasm and now I want to take every class in the curriculum.

I would recommend the class to anybody.
