Default Holstered With Hammer Back?

I have watched a few shows on the Outdoor Channel and I noticed last week that one of the instructors would holster his automatic weapon with the hammer back. I came across this picture today of the same thing:

My weapon is a double action so I don't have to cock. As long as there is one in the chamber I am good for go. It seems to me that re-holstering with the hammer back would be very dangerous. Am I missing something here?

Cocked and locked on a 1911. Very safe and very common.

In fact, on a 1911, it's the only way to safely carry if there is a round in the chamber. Otherwise, you are bypassing one or more of the three safeties.

That picture doesn't show the safety on the left side of the firearm. My Kimber has an ambi safety, so you can see it on both sides. It's always "locked" when it is holstered (or when loaded outside of the holster).

The picture also doesn't show the grip safety.

Carrying with the hammer cocked is also perfectly acceptable on non-1911 type firearms equipped with a manual safety that does NOT function as a de-cocker (HK USP comes to mind)

All this keeping in mind that the primary safety is your brain housing group.

Exactly, when I carry my HK USPc, it is always C&L too.

I have often wondered what the protocol was for 1911's in the military. I always figured it was condition 3, no round in chamber, for most situations, and condition 1 when the enemy was within sight or hearing, but don't know........any one remember the pre Beretta days?

We'll never know all those military folks that have been killed when the enemy WASN'T within sight or hearing!

Cocked and locked. +1

I carry a Bersa .45 UC. The safety automatically de-cocks the gun. Therefore, it would not be safe to carry cocked. Since it is a DA, you just point and shoot.

This will give you a better idea.

You can see the grip safety and the thumb safety. (in this case ambi)
