Default Basic Defensive Shotgun

I know this is not about CCW training but I did take my CCW renewal class from this same instructor team.

I was able to attend a basic defensive shotgun course given by Powers Security Training in Bakersfield. ( POWERS SECURITY TRAINING ) I had a great time from the moment I arrived until I left. I won’t bore you with the specific details of the class, it contained what you would expect in a basic class. I do want to tell you how much I appreciate and admire Craig and Becky Powers. They are a wonderful team as instructors and are great ambassadors for the shooting sports. They both displayed a warm, welcoming demeanor and put everyone in our class at ease. There were several shooters that had no experience with a weapon and I believe they left with a great deal of confidence that they did not posses when they first arrived. That same thing goes for me as well. I have owned my shotgun for nearly 7 years but had only put a few hundred rounds through it, mostly shooting at bowling pins and plastic bottles. By the time I left I was much more knowledgeable about what my shotgun could do and confident in what I could do with it. I watched as Craig and Becky displayed patience and genuine care with each student and was glad to have been a recipient of the same. If you are in the Kern County area and are able to take any of their classes, I encourage you to do so and I hope you have as good a time as I did.

Here is your disclaimer, for those of you who need it : I am not an employee or representative of Powers Security Training. I am merely a student that was impressed enought to let you all know my opinion.

CCW or not, any defense training is always good. I wish they had this up here at the north end of the state.

I took a defensive shotgun down here in Southern California from Self Defense Firearms Training - Be Safe, Be Confident, Get Trained! It was a blast!!! Learned a lot too! Also got to play with a Benelli M1 that made me want to buy one. (still haven't but it is on the short list!)

I took my shotgun training from the Oklahoma Correctional Academy. I recommend that everyone take some kind of shotgun defensive training.

I took that class too! It was really well done, and I was even given some advice on some modifications I should make to my shotgun to make it fit me better. I had a great time and can't wait til I find the time for another class. I think Intermediate Handgun may be next.

Good point. When I took my class I learned tons. People think the shotgun is just point in general direction and shoot.

I found at the distances we were shooting at it took me a lot of practice to be able to consistently hit the target especially with speed. Even more so when shooting from the hip.

Not to mention speed reloads etc.

One of the things I liked about the class was being able to watch people with non- shotguns getting the job done. They were a little slower on some of the excercises where we shot multiple targets, multiple times but they showed that you can use a "duck gun" to throw out some serious lead. I really liked learning what my shotgun is capable of with the ammo I run, I was impressed and am much more confident now.

I have taken their CCW renewal class as well and Becky is a very good baker.

There's nothing like a 00 buck doubletap to ruin a home invasion robber's day.
