Steel Challenge - Apple Valley Gun Club
Had a great Saturday morning at Apple Valley Gun Club on the 13th when the club hosted their monthly Steel Challenge. The contest started at 8 and was over at noon.
The range was configured with four stages and participants using a wide variety of pistols from .22 through 45. While semi-automatics are the main choice for shooters there was one revolver in use (and the guy was GOOD). Each stage allowed five strings and time was the name of the game. With 10 round mags it can take up to 150 rounds to successfully shoot the course. All shooting is initiated from the surrender position with the pistol holstered.
This was my first-ever opportunity to shoot steel and I had a ball shooting my Glock 22 with 180 grain Speer Lawman target ammo. I averaged six rounds per string so I had a bit of left over ammo at the end. The most enjoyable part (besides shooting) was the comraderie shared by everyone reaching out to help whenever needed.
The Steel Challenge is a monthly event that is open to the public. The next event is on October 11th.
