FL: CCW Shooter Acquitted; Gang Torches His House

It was the right verdict that shouldn't have shocked anyone. Even the prosecutor wasn't surprised.

At first blush, though, it may seem like Norman Borden got away with murder. The suburban West Palm Beach man emptied his gun into a car, killing two men, and a jury acquitted him of all charges.

But Borden wasn't the typical assailant, and the men he shot were not innocent victims. The Jeep they were in almost ran Borden down before he opened fire. Officials say at least one of the three men inside was a known member of the violent street gang Sur 13 and had a baseball bat resting against his leg. All three were intent on beating a lesson into their neighbor, the lone survivor testified.

It was a clear case of self-defense, and a definitive sign that the gangs infiltrating South Florida's streets are a growing threat, frightening enough to drive some to uncharacteristic extremes. [...]
