Question New Member from San Diego

Hi guys, I'm a Marine from San Diego. I recently called SD sheriff's office and the lady on the phone told me I was not qualified for a CCW because I'm an active duty military. Has anyone else heard this before? I asked her couple of times to be clear and she said other than my "good cause" is not a good cause, active duty military are not qualified.

Anyone know a "good cause" for san diego other than the ones mentioned in their web site?

I take it you are not permante resident of San Diego county. As a result, they will not issue.

Actually I am. I told the lady that California is my home of record before going into the Marines and I'm currently stationed in S.D. I'm a homeowner in San Diego.

Welcome to the state of "Selective Issuance".

They like to keep weapons out of the hands of well trained people in San Diego. It is not politically correct to weigh the advantage to the good guy, and not give the bad guy a fighting chance.

thanks everyone. It just sucks that I have 12 years of weapons and tactics training, been in 2 combat tours, was a Marksmanship instructor for 2 years, been trained in the Marine Corps in Concealed Weapons Carry (HRP in Quantico),
and I can't even carry a handgun in San Diego. I need to move...

My feeling is....if you don't shoot, you can not score! Go for it!
It might be waisted time, but you will never know otherwise!
And if you care, we'll be here for you!

I would like to quote from the "Handgun Safety Certificate Study Guide", published by the California Department of Justice.
This is in reference to proof of residency for purchasing a handgun....not necessarily for a CCW, but it might be a start. We would have to check the statutes to see if the proof of residency for a CCW would be the same. I don't know. Page 34. this is what it states:Quote.
"Proof of Residency Requirement."
"To purchase a handgun in California you must present documentation indicating that you are a California resident. Acceptable documentation includes a utility bill from within the last three months, a residential lease, a property deed or military permanent duty station orders indicating assignment within California.
The address provided on the DROS ( Dealer Record Of Sales), must match either the address on the proof-of-residency document or the address on the purchaser's California Driver's License or Identification Card [ PC Section 12071 (b) ] "Unquote
Now there might be a chance that you may be able to proceed with your intentions of securing a CCW.
I will have to research next if the residency requirements for a CCW permit, as stipulated within the statutes, are in alignment with the statement above. If that is the case, you will be able to affirm your residency.
In such case that the residency issue would be the point of contention, by being able to demonstrate residency, either by your permanent change of station paperwork, or home of record, as you state your home of record is in California, then you hopefully will be out of the woods.
I will have to research the CCW residency requirements. That will be in time, it should not be hard to research either. Hoping someone else here will join in our search. I am not a legal eagle, but will always side with the man in the trenches.

Thanks guys, and Doc!

I'm not worried about showing residency proof...I'm a registered gun owner in california!! I definetly will apply, I am also applying for Florida's non-resident CCW as well as Virginia's.
