Keep in mind that "law enforcement" and "high quality" don't always match. Prepare to be disappointed in this regard.

That being said, do the agencies you're currently interviewing with allow their officers/deputies to buy their own duty weapons?

If so, you might be in luck.

If not, you may be putting the cart before the horse.

My suggestion: Find a range that rents firearms and spend your $$ on practice ammo. Make sure you're practicing "right" and not further ingraining bad habits (we all have them)

While I can certainly understand your situation, just remember one thing: The choices you make in equipment purchases (however limited they may be per department policy) can make the difference in whether or not you make it HOME to your two young ones.

Regardless of how much gear will eventually be issued by your employer, you WILL buy a lot of gear your first year out. Choose wisely.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the brotherhood.

As to the Glock 22
That is the issue arm for the Sheriff, Bak. PD and the Probation Dept. the three largest LE agencies in the county...
Yes you can hide the 22 with the right holster and clothing.

Valley Gun or Bear Mountain Sports will offer you special pricing. They can get the guns rather quickly if they don't have it in stock.

2nd ammendment sports tried to sell one of our officers (probation) a used gun the other day... it was all they had in the LEO section. They are the Glock LE Dealer and are supposed to sell to leo's very cheap... however they never seem to have any guns in stock... for the last year or so...oh they will order it for you... and it takes 6-10 months... Valley or Bear mtn. can get you a gun in days usually and for only a slightly increased price.

Valley Gun and Bear Mountain are both doing individual officer purchase programs through glock...or that's the word on the street...

around here? Buy the glock 22 if you anticipate getting into le work. They are easier to train you on than the 23 as they have a longer sight radius and they don't kick as hard... with 125+ armed officers to train, we (probation) have had a substantially improved success as we have gradually traded in our model 23's for model 22's... we hate the 23's... nasty kicking obnoxious things they are... just like the model 27 only different...or am I stepping on some toes?....
(all praise to the kimber ultra carry it anywhere two... does that make everyone happy?)

If you can CCW a Glock 22 on a regular basis then more power to you!

Default What brand of weapon

I would advise you to carry the same style of weapon off duty as you would on duty. Muscle memory is very important. Many law enforcement agencies have specific brands that you can buy. If you have to carry a double action on duty, it would make sense to carry the same type of double action off duty. One less thing to think about when the time comes.

Please do use that phrase, it does not exist. Never will. That is very hard to defend.

AMEN!

Query: I use the term "pre programmed response" or what Grossman uses: auto-pilot...

In what manner do you discuss the phenom?

Familiarity. The more you do something, the more familiar you are with it. I keep it simple for Juries.

My clients have never made it to the Jury yet... justifiable fortuanately and nobody is suing from what I have heard....

Always want to make the presentation better don't you know...thanks...

I generally refer to it as pre-programed... ie: if i pre-program the draw.. by doing it 500 times then I don't have to think the process through... I engage the draw subroutine... it works better as an analogy for those who are computer literate though... some of the over 70 crowd get lost on that one...

If you are going to be a LEO.
One of your tools will be a handgun. Get a tool you can use well, if the tool does not work under certain conditions, you no longer have a tool to use at all, so it must work all the time. That tool is your life.
If it gets scratched, dragged, muddy, lost in a river, etc....then get something that will not cost you significantly to replace, so don't go for beauty, go for function. Would you have a problem going camping with your gun, say in the swamps of Florida, the jungles of the San Juan river in Costa Rica, or Panama? Will it rust? will it jam? Will you be willing to drag it on the beautiful white sands of some beach God knows where and know it will fire? What if it gets dropped on the rocky coast of some island,. or get rained on for hours in the heat....will it work?, it is your life.
Ultimately, can you shoot it well?
Ok, enough drama.
I ask myself that when I strap on a weapon that could be used to save my bacon. That Sir, is the test for me!.
Good Luck.
By the way I was in C.R. about two weeks ago...talking about rain and heat!!!!!!! Boiled Cojones!!!!

I'm talking about my LEO agency clients, and a few civil suits on civilian shootings.

No matter how much you stretch, tone, and condition, all you teach your muscles is how to tolerate flexion, extension, and metabolism under load.

Memory is a function of the nervous system.

In other words:

How can you spot the zombies in a yoga class?
They're the ones not doing yoga: they can't, they're zombies.

(We haven't yet figured out how they can walk.)

CCWI already made the point, but it's worth repeating.
Besides, I like the transient image of zombies trying to do yoga...
