Default OC

Hello everyone.

I am a newbie here from OC. I am a full time pastor and love my job. I've already received some great advice from some of you and I appreciate it (especially from CCWI). I am at the point of determining which handgun to get for CCW. Right now I am wavering between a Glock 26 and a S&W 637 or 638. I am comfortable shooting both. I dress casually for a warm climate and want to choose the one that would be most appropriate. Any insight from you would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, this website is truly a blessing and I am sure our founding fathers would all be members!

Thank you,

RM

Welcome RM 1. We have a saying around here; "Join the one gun a month club!".

If I joined the one gun a month club, I would also be an instant member of the sleeping in the dog house club!

I have shot the Kimber. It was the most accurate handgun I've ever had the pleasure to shoot (except for my S&W 686, but that has a 6" barrel).

I have some hesitancy regarding carrying cocked and locked even though I shoot best with 1911 styles.

Where are some of the best places to buy? I recently made a purchase at Saddleback Valley Gun Center and was very pleased with everything (except the smoke!). But they have a limited selection. I work by Grant Boys, but their prices are a bit high. Any suggestions?

I hear you on the dog house - although for me it would be NO house...mortgage v. guns, tough choice but I really like AC in 100 degree weather!

The Kimber Ultras are extremely accurate, but I shoot an HK USP Compact (DA/ SA, so it doesn't need to be cocked & locked) nearly just as well. It does have a double stack mag, which makes it a bit harder to conceal, but I know somebody that pulls it off quite easily.

When I was gun shopping I test drove as many as possible - Check out the Range Report threads for group trips to the local ranges - everyone's always happy to share their toys!

Welcome aboard & Happy Hunting!

Did you just get back from Africa? I know a guy who can save you some money on guns.

Having worked at The Grant Boys - yes, they are.

I did not just get back from Africa, although some good friends did.

Please let me know how to contact your guy.

Thank you!

Welcome aboard and from what I see, you are being sent in the right direction. If Grant Boys is closer to you that Saddleback Valley Gun ... I'd look up "A Guy" as you've been instructed. Do not mistake him for "The Guy" as CCW1 can only help you in the present, but with proper training he can assist in preventing an early departure from this realm.

If you're hesitant to carry cocked and locked, you should be more hesitant to carry a Glock chambered. There is less to do in making it go boom; hence, fewer mistakes to cause the problem. Unless you're religious about practicing safe handling, you'll likely do better with a double-action-only handgun. (With practice, the Glock is perfectly safe; and the 1911-styles are all the more so.)

Default Thanks

Thank you all for your kind and informative comments! I went gun shopping today at Ade's. Didn't buy, but possibly narrowed my choices down.

My son is a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist and is coming home on leave this Friday. I haven't seen him in a year. He's done two tours in Iraq. I taught him to shoot when he was young, now he is an expert marksman and way better than his old man. He is the gunner for the Mark 19 which shoots 340 grenades per minute. I'm looking forward to going to the range with him.
