welcome!
Forgive my ignorance: I did not realize that NY issues CCW. Is it something that's available outside of NYC and maybe NYC is the only place that's non issuing? or does NYC issue as well? Also I'm kind of curious what is the process for applying for a CCW permit in NY (I wonder if it's more complicated or simpler then CA). In regards to LA, sadly you are correct. At this point getting a CCW in LA is tough but hopefully things will change for the better sooner rather then later. |

thanks for the welcome...
NY is a confusing state (the way they like it to be), so bare with me. First, NYC does not issue CCW permits unless you are a retired LEO or mil. They do issue on premise licenses, just so you can own in your home. but you better not get caught with that gun outside your house, or you suffer more prosecution that rape and murder criminals do. Outside NYC, is done by each individual county. Some counties issue un-restricted full carry licenses. Others issue restricted ones, i.e. carry only to and from the range or hunting site. It is done by the county clerk in each county. They go through the police dpt, then the judges. It is a 6+ month process (when we all know it should take no longer than a week), and its relatively expensive. ($100-$200 depending on county). I lived in the county just above NYC. they did not issue un-restricted licenses, so I could only carry "to and from the range"... but some of us in the county found ways around that ![]() Also, you have to have a permit to purchase the gun. So, you have to take the appropriate NRA personal protection course, but you can't take the part where they teach you how to shoot, because if you don't have a permit to purchase, you can't even pick up a pistol. So then you go buy a pistol, then you submit your 300 page application with the reciept from your pistol. Then you wait. and wait and wait. When they finally tell you the permit is ready, you go back to the class and finish the class. Then you go pick up the license, then you go pick up the gun. They make it as difficult as possible for you to own/buy/carry a gun. sorry for the book...that's what is needed to explain NY's gun nonsense.

Now, when you move here, you will no longer be a resident. I know in California, your license is no longer valid, beyond 90 days of change of residence.

Welcome to the forum, Joe, from the Central Valley. About 6 hours North of LA.
Nice explanation of NY vs NYC gun laws. It never occured to me that the state would be so different from the city, but then I'm a Left Coaster. ![]()

TaxMan - that is correct. As soon as I become a CA resident, my NY license is dead. However, my other out of state licenses are still good. Most importantly my FL license, which covers most of the country.
Mad Geek - Thanks for the welcome. NYC is treated as a completely different state, especially when it comes to gun laws.

I think your best would be if possible, live in Ventura County, to the immediate north of LA, or Orange County, to the immediate south of LA. CCW'S are much easier to get there. Then you could commute to you job in LA. Thousands do.
