I'm in the process of taking responsibility for my safety and the safety of my loved ones, and hope to learn from those who have traveled this route before me.
The impetus came when I came home one evening, just after dusk and found two hooded guys making their way through my neighbors window. As my car headlights swept into my parking space, there these two guys were, one had the top half of his body through the window while his cohort was standing on a chair helping him in. Lights were on inside and the interior of the loft space was visible from the street, so I have to believe they knew somebody was there. Both bolted and ran out the front of our fenced in complex. It was a "moment of clarity". I realized that I needed to be able to defend myself and my family and that if and when that time came, there wasn't going to be a LEO there to prevent it. It was, and is, my responsibility. After living in Venice for 25 years, I've developed a good situational awareness level. But I ease back into a relaxed state when getting home. After all there are gates and fences all around and you must get buzzed into the complex. All the advice of not becoming complacent, of thinking "it won't happen to me" suddenly seemed like a fairy tale of innocence that evaporated in an instant. So I'm starting my journey to becoming responsible to myself and my wife (and kids if they happen to be visiting). After learning of the hoops one has to jump through here in California to get a weapon and my choice of weapons, I must say I'm appalled at myself for having ignored the erosion of my rights. Came out of the Army ('71-'74) with my nose to the grindstone and my head up my **s. So I've taken my first 4 Day Defensive Handgun course at Front Sight. Going back with my wife in tow in a couple of weeks to get her started on her training. Doing a lot of dry practice, acquiring a gun safe and following the threads on several forums so as to avoid having to learn the lessons myself the hard way. I look forward to learning from you and participating in restoring the rights I feel have been unfairly and unconstitutionally taken away from us and addressing my shame of of letting things get to this point in this country. |

Great First Post !!!
Everything you said hit's home for me as well. I became "aware" about 7 years ago and received my CCW 3 years ago. Welcome and I look forward to your progress reports. Thank you for your service as well. Yoda

Welcome aboard, and as others have said, thank you for your service.
I have good friends who live in Venice, my grandparents lived there on Superba Ave for many many years. It seems to have become a bit of an enclave for the Hollywood set these days. While standing out in the street, Tim Robbins stopped in for a chat. (He is a very big dude!) Anyway, LA county is one of the more challenging counties in our fair state. Good luck with your quest and let us know how any of us (especially those in LA County) may be able to assist you.

Welcome to the site, NowAware.
Wouldn't it be nice if the world were full of law abiding, God fearing people? I'm sure that most of us have at one point or another chosen the bliss of ignorance rather than face the harshness of reality. I believe that there is infinately more good on Earth than evil, but I will stand vigilant, with my eyes open wide knowing it's out there. Awareness is key. Sorry you had to experience such a rude awakening... but better to be awake, than be a victim. Good for you, for deciding to do something about it and becoming a responsible gun owner! God bless you for your service and best wishes on all your endeavors. ![]()

Welcome aboard.
