Default Introduction

Just introducing myself. I have always debated about a CCW figuring it was too difficult to get.

Ten years ago I was very close then I changed careers and became a teacher.

I figured this would preclude me from ever getting one, then I found out several people I knew in teaching had them and carried everyday at work.

I have also made some long term friends who basically can "help" me get one.

So...my questions are:

1) what course is it I need to take, I have an idea but I'm not sure about all the little details

2) what to carry? I have a 26, but I really love my 1911's, but I'm afraid they are too big. I'm thinking maybe a revolver? I would imagine the 26 is a good choice but I want more than one option. My current revolvers are all too big.

Thanks

Glad to have found this site.

Stick to what you can shoot well. There are way to pack them. Vest and an endless suppy of holster.
Best of luck

welcome

I would choose my use of words carefully as far as "help" is concerned,

although "we" understand your intent, there are "those" that could misconstrue the message to be seen as
"issued with favoritism"

Oh yeah I see that now...

What I MEANT to say is they have offered to help me go through all the steps and avoid any mistakes...because I've heard you better dot all your "I"s and cross your "T"s and so on.

I'll edit it it.

Oh, I guess you can't edit it like my other forums once it's posted. Weird because this is the same format.

Thanks

I guess I'm also a little intimidated by the whole process, but I've been shooting most of my life. I do all my reloading, my kids and I shoot almost weekly and I'm often assisting some law enforcement friend in firearm selection or taking them hunting or shooting.

They all seem to think the course will be no problem for me, but I'm worried that maybe I shouldn't look into other options.

I shoot the Commander most and can shoot the 26 equally as well, but what are your opinions? Should I explore any other options?

I don't like the double stack width of the 26 for carry, but I don't have and holsters either. Everything I have is outside.

Any overwhelming suggestions/popular choices?

Point to know is during the summer I'm always in shorts.

Can you tell I'm looking for another excuse to buy another gun?

well.......ahem.........imo, one can never have enough firearms, with that said, I cc IWB a full size 1911, a Ruger GP 100 4" barrel and a .38 snubbie, but not all at the same time

I always felt that the 1911 was small in my hands until I started cc, however with time, it has become quite easy to wear and still not be noticable, even in shorts, but then again being 6'4" and 300 lbs.......well enough said

within time, the forum members will chime in with what they like, everyone has a choice and that choice is what works for them,

I carried the 1911 for sometime before switching to the GP100, which I thought would be more noticable but have come to prefer to carry the revolver over the 1911,

I believe you will fit right into this forum, relax, read, post frequently,

as far as training, the class I took was 8 hours, for me the instructor was what I call 3C (clear complete concise) someone from your area will chime in with some good instructors, I havent looked at your County's CCW application, there maybe instructors listed there

Most here seem to like the Kahr PM9. Not cheap!
Research it to know what you are getting into. See if you can shoot one, for the experience.
CCW exempts you from prohibition against carriage in a school. Most school have their own statutes again carriage of knifes, firearms, etc.
Although there would be no criminal violation, you could be fired for breaking school statutes.
I will caution you against attempting to secure a letter from the school authorities, authorizing you to carry on school campus, the record shows that most persons who have attempted to go that route will be flagged and warned.
You are expendable and until there are quite a number of school active shooters, where people get executed a la Columbine, the laws will not change.
Sorry, this is harsh reality. Students pulling knives on teachers is not an isolated event any more. Schools will hide the numbers of incidents to demonstrate that their campuses are safe. This is almost standard procedure. Shocking but true, it is just coming to light! They are run by a crowd who prefer to stick their head in the sand until it goes away, while armed gangs become a part of school life. That is why teachers do not last very long in their careers.

Really...hmmm I have the 6", obviously too big, shot my first hog with it, but I was thinking I'd really rather have at least one revolver on my list.

I had bad luck with Kahr...bought one, wouldn't feed right, got another...same problem...got a third and well I don't own one anymore, but that was a LONG time ago.

I have NO intention of carrying at work although I do know those who do. Your preaching to the choir about schools, I haven't been teaching my whole career, but long enough to realize it needs fixing. If the general public knew how bad it was they'd hopefully make some changes, starting with school boards and administrators who water down discipline...I've been threated and even had my house vandalized and broken into by students.

Sorry off subject...I don't want the CCW for work that's not part of my intention.

Now if I go back to my old job...

Well, just though I mention it in case you did not know.
Just trying to fill you in about issues which could possibly generate future problems.

Some ranges will rent guns for a test drive, they want you to use thier ammo generally.

Welcome bczolone!!

If you can find the right holster, you can make the 1911 comfortable. Don't rule out the double stackers either. Sometimes it is a matter of how you carry instead of what you carry.

Good luck,

Keith

No...I'm already online looking at them

So here's my next question...9mm or .45?

I say this because I ultimately reload and I'm set up for these and if I go .40 (I know they are more readily available) I'll have to retool so to speak.
