Default Moving to camp pendleton

I am new here, just looking for some info.

I am going to be stationed in camp pendleton in january, living somewhere in that area very possibly in oceanside. I am just curious what the chances of getting a ccw in san diego county were and if being active duty military will help my chances in any way.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Welcome to the sight and thanks for your service.

Regarding SanDiego, I bet couple of our San Diego experts will chime in shortly.

Welcome to the site! And thank you for your service. Unfortunately, experience has shown that the current SD Sheriff is unwilling to issue CCWs to average citizens. You need to be a business owner dealing with large cash deposits, transporting valuable goods, etc. We do have an election coming up next year and we hope to get a pro-CCW candidate elected.

That is unfortunately what i have heard. And I would vote in the upcoming election, but I am still registered as a resident of WA and i dont think i am going to change that. I guess I will just have to be patient and see what I can accomplish when i get there.

Unfortunately, active duty military stationed in CA does not qualify as residency.

My understanding is that once you are assigned to a new base, your PCS documents show you to be a resident of that state, so you can use those papers to show you as a resident. Your home of record is what could be different, you name that.

I can change my residency to california if that is what i really want. However i am going to be leaving CA again within a couple of years, so i am not going to register as a california resident.

My point is that in effect, for those two years, you are a California resident. Your home of record is different, where you came from when you signed up.

Check out San Clementa, its on the north side of Camp Penn. Its in Orange county (don't know much about their ccw). Way nicer than Oceanside at least it was back when I was at Camp Penn. 89'-93'

I appreciate the heads up. Plus from what i have read OC is a lot friendlier about ccw than SD is. So i will most definitely look into it.

Orange County used to be a CCW friendly place under Sheriff Corona, but that all came to a screeching halt when he was removed and replaced by appointed Sheriff Hutchens whose mission is to revoke them all. Check the residency requirement to be sure. Since CA doesn't issue out of state permits, I believe you need to be a resident. Also wouldn't your CO have to give you permission to carry a handgun on the base?

Oh that is unfortunate that things have gone downhill. Hopefully they can get a new sheriff soon that is more open to CCW. The residency shouldnt be an issue as i will be living off base so i will be able to show residency without a problem. As far as carrying on base i have heard different things so i guess i will look into it when i get there. I am hoping i am allowed to carry but if not i guess i can live with that too.

Welcome to the site...

FYI - There is an active civilian rifle club that shoots at CP. As active military you can bring your AR-15 service rifles into CA, but you MUST do the proper paperwork.

If you are to bring ANY personal firearm(rifle, pistol, shotgun) onto base at CP you must have it registered with the local base. The guys who are member of Santa Marguerita Gun Club can help you with that..... I am no longer an active member since I travel too much for work and have no time.

The above registrations will also apply to CCW weapons and I am quite sure neither you, nor anyone is allowed CCW on base w/o DOD approval.

After the recent issue at Ft Hood, I do not see DOD gettign any looser with the regulations since it is rumored that the shooter used personal firearms and not issue weapons.

All above statements are from memory, so please confirm with those that are authorities and have written docs......

Man! You would think that the incident in Texas would open the doors for carrying on base. If more people were around with guns this guys would have been shut down before he did so much damage. And I SERIOUSLY doubt that the guns he used were authorized to be on base. It is the old adage, when guns are outlawed.....

I completely agree. A shooting like that shouldnt be a reason to stop people from carrying a weapon. It should be the reason to allow more people to carry. The number of killed and injured could have been much lower if someone was there with their own firearm, especially with the training the military has.
