Hello from SoCal. Whatever you do, don't pay cash at the SO for the permit.

If ever there was a safe time to pay with cash, this would be it...

Just like when the manager at Taco Bell catches an employee crappin' in the beans. The next few weeks, you know the staff is being monitored and the food is safe to eat.

P.S. I never checked in here... So... "Here".

Default Who Is Able?

Do you think you are adequately trained to protect yourself with your concealed handgun? If so, raise your hand, and explain why you believe you are!

This question should go under the "Training" forum and NO I don't think I am adequately trained to protect myself with a concealed handgun. This question is IMPOSSIBLE to answer until you actually have to use it for SD. As far as I am concerned, we all could use more training and practice. It wouldn't even bother me if the county required more training...like twice a year or something.

I take the responsibility of carrying a deadly weapon VERY seriously. Anyone who doesn't shouldn't be carrying. That said, anyone who does take it seriously should WANT to train more. If you haven't prepared to use the weapon, you put yourself and the general public in greater danger than if you didn't even have the weapon with you.

I practice my draw EVERY TIME I put on my weapon because each time you dress you dress differently. I want to be sure that I can present my weapon from concealment quickly and safely no matter what I am wearing. There are certain clothing combinations in my closet that just don't work for me and I have to change shirts or use a different holster to make sure that I am prepared to draw.

I practice with ALL my weapons at least twice a month, more if I am not too busy. I wish I could practice more and I wish there were more variety to my practice. This is why I want to try USPSA/IDPA competitions. Not because I want to win and get some glory from it, but because I want to try different scenarios in my practice.

I think that anyone who says they KNOW they are prepared to use their weapon is delusional UNLESS they have actually had to use it for SD already. Training and practice should be paramount to anyone who carries. No one is so proficient at ANYTHING that they are perfect. Just look at professional golfers, they are the best at what they do but still make practice and instruction part of their daily routine. I just wish that we who CCW could practice every day.

Good question BTW.

Keith

Did you retire from the SO? Maybe a sergeant?

I retired from California Department of Corrections. My question was intended to make people think about what they are doing to learn how to use their concealed handguns, instead of settling for the training that comes in the box with the new handgun.

Keith, excellent points about preparing. You are obviously very serious about doing so.
