Default From The Trenches of AB2062

A report back from the front. .

We gathered at the Capitol building at 9:00am and heard from Sam Paredes of Gun Owners of California on how the day would proceed. It turns out that we would not be protesting but we actually would be lobbying the assembly members. About 75 or so individuals turned out. We were collected into groups of 8 or 10 individuals

We heard from a number of legislators including McClintock, LaMalfa, Maze that all support our cause. We then broke into teams that were assigned a number of assembly members that had appointments set in advance of today to address AB2062. The first office that our team was scheduled to meet with was Assemblyman Ted Lieu (D) dist. 53-Torrance. Unfortunately he was serving his two week stint at the Air force National Guard. We however were able to talk to his staff. They were very attentive and took down two and a half pages of notes. A plus was that the staff member that was taking notes was an Eagle Scout and had participated in shooting sports when he was younger. We went over our talking points and were well received. He seemed to believe that it would get moved to the suspense file. Sort of a no mans land for bills. He stated that we should understand that this large of a group rarely appears in person and how significant it was that we were there.

Next was Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D) dist. 06- San Rafael. He had been double booked for lobbyist groups and we also spoke to his staffer. She was shocked to learn that the cost to individuals would be so high. She also stated that with the initial outlay of 20 million plus to start the program that she did not think it would make it out of the suspense file. This indicated that it had been placed in suspension while we were there . She asked a number of good questions that we answered effectively. She did ask if there was any kind of compromise that we would accept. We responded no and explained why. It was a positive meeting. We had met in the hall in front of Huffman’s office as we could not all fit into the office; As we were talking to her, Assemblyman DeLeon, responsible for this bill was standing behind the group because he could not get by the crowd. He stood there for about 3 minutes or so and got an ear full of how we felt about his bill . We paused and he stepped through.

The balance of the meetings was with those that support our position and we thanked them and it was a great visit. This was repeated in all of the assembly offices today. For two hours today our voice was heard.

We need to put more faces to our situation. I am an Election Volunteer Coordinator for the NRA-ILA in the 2nd and 3rd congressional districts; that is most of California From Sacramento north to Oregon and from the coastal range east to Nevada. If you would like to get involved in this battle PLEASE contact me or the EVC in your area. I will help you get connected with your representatives and you can lobby them, help them get elected, call them when needed, it is up to you how involved you get. If the NRA-ILA is not your cup of tea, get with a group that is, I saw the difference that a face makes today.

Did the same thing last year in DC for a part of the Financial Services Industry. Saw three congressman. Finished up with OC's, Ed Royce.

Was a great day. But very hectic. We were fortunate to meet all the congressmen and not get stuck with staffers. In one case a meeting was held in a hallway outside the congresional finance comitee chambers.

Great job!!!! I bet you had a blast!!!!!

Thanks for talking with my rep's reps.
When I called Lieu's office today they didn't tell me he was out of town.

This bill belongs in the bit bucket for deletion.

Very much appreciated that you took your time and energy to get in person with those that will decide this bill's fate.
