Default Transporting Firearms on Motorcycle?

Does anybody know how to legally transport firearms when riding a motorcycle? Assuming that there are no saddlebags/side cases. I'm familar how to legally transport firearms with a car, but am wondering how it is supposed to be done when riding my motorcycle, or if it's even possible to do legally. I'm talking pistols and ammo, not long guns. Anybody know? Thanks.

Handgun UNLOADED in a locked case. Ammo outside of locked case.

Put locked case containing unloaded handgun in back pack. Place ammo next to it in back pack.

Good to go.

And secure said backpack VERY well, a thread a while back documented a person who lost his new Springfield on the freeway, because he did not zip up his pack well...he did retrieve it, but it looked pretty beat up.

Thanks BonoVox.

I have less of an issue with lockable fiberglas saddle bags and a locking storage compartment.

Funny how a Harley Owner doesn't think about a backpack when it comes to riding.

Better double check that, on a car you cannot just lock the gun into a hard case that is secured or affixed to the vehicle (as in bolted to the car), hence many of us use the center-of-mass hard cases, locked, with a cable tethered to the car. It seems to me that a lockable storage compartment is the same as a locking bolted on box or utility box...anybody ever get a ruling on this issue?

Good point. At the very least I would have UNLOADED HG locked in it's own case if you place it in the saddle bags.

Just so I'm not misunderstood, I have a Center Of Mass box and cable in both my cars. If I were to need to carry more than what is in a holster on the motorcycle, I wouldn't just put a pistol in the saddlebag or tour pack. I'd put one of the COM boxes in the upper tour pack and attach the cable to something non-removable and carry the unloaded pistol there. It's too easy to NOT do.

As far as I'm concerned, the tour pack or saddle bags would be no different than a car trunk. IIRC, CCWI stated that a locking box or safe bolted to the floor of a vehicle would not meet the legal requirements.

Good story! Was it this?
I think it started here < http://www.calccw.com/Forums/carry-g...ed-locked.html > and led to < Had a HUGE accident with my 20minute old GI - Page 2 - 1911Forum > just shy of half way down the page. Post number 43?

WKC's first post on your first link brings up the Hyway incident. When I saw the pictures back then it made me cringe.

I believe you have got it correctly. BTW, the attached cable is only for theft protection, it has no bearing on the legality of the gun transportation.

A car's trunk is specifically mentioned in the PC, but all these other type of car/truck/cycle storage boxes are not mentioned, so fall into dangerous territory. I have a hard top on my pickup truck bed, with locks, but I still use a locking hard gun case, which I know is legal.

BTW, those black COM cases are so small and compact, you could easily slip one into a saddlebag or backpack, instantly legal transportation.

Wrong! If it's UNLOADED and LOCKED up, it's not a concealed weapon.

Thanks for explaining all this guys. Looks like I found a fun way to get to the gun range. I'll be sure to zip up my backpack the proper way....
