Default moving from colorado to CA

Hope this is the right forum. If not, please direct me to
the right one.

I currently live in colorado. I am planning to move to CA in
approx 9-12 months. Placerville area. I don't know what
county that is. My background. Not a "bad man" in any
regards legally or otherwise. I can pass any background
check required. Previous TS clearance has proven this

I have been reading and reading and reading and reading about
CA gun laws. There seems to be no end to them and the confusion
about them calguns.net this forum etc...

What I do know:
1) no high cap mags (10+). period. I will make sure I have none upon
entering the state.
2) must register my hand guns within 30 days and pay a fee.
3) CA has an "approved" list of hand guns.
Roster of Approved Firearms Safety Devices - Firearms Division - California Dept. of Justice

What I don't know:
1) my PT-1911 taraus doesn't seem to appear on the list. Is the
weapon a no-go?

2) my S&W M&P 40 is on the list and I do have the mag disconnect.
But its not stamped on the side as having the disconnect.
Is this weapon a go?

3) how often does the "list" get updated?

4) do I have to take any training classes to possess these weapons?
I have a current CCW and the required training classes from CO.
I *know* the CCW won't transfer but will the training courses?

5) have 2 AR uppers and according to calguns.net I can purchase
a stripped lower not on the banned lowers list and,
a) permentally affix(tool required for removal) a 10 round mag and have all
the other "evil" items.
b) removable mag(10 round) but no "evil" items. pistol grip, collapsable
stock etc....

My AR question. Do I have to worry about bringing the uppers into
the state? I know ... no high cap mags. period.

I already have a lower (LMT) which is not on the banned list and
which I already know you can purchase stripped in CA. Can I strip
this lower down, bring it into the state, install a fixed mag and build
it back up legally? Or do I have to purchase a stripped lower from
within CA?

6) I'm ****sure***** there is lots I don't know ... Please enlighten me.

thank you in advance for the time and effort required answering my questions.

ps: I get the distinct feeling CA is trying to make "legal" gun ownership so
onerous as to make most people give up and not bother with all the trouble.
Its "legal" alright .... but you have to go through so many hoops and
confusions. Love the state, hate the anti-gun lawmakers

You are allowed to bring in non approved guns as a new resident. You have no problem with your handguns.

P-Ville is in El Darado county.

Our two AW laws were designed to alllow no more AW's in the state period. So I'm not and nor will anybody on this forum address your off list lowers.

To add to CCWI's comments. You may want to try another website with questions regarding you AR's. Our area of expetise is strictly with CCW and CCW handguns.

Welcome aboard.

CCWInstructor,
thanks for the info. I thought the answer would be quite a bit more confusing I'm glad its that simple.

Understood on the AW's. I will ask on calguns.net or
simply give up on them all together.

Good morning! Read your post in the Welcome forum and saw you'd posted questions here as well.

I'm not even going tio attempt to answer any of your CA law questions. There are too many and I don't want to give you bad advice.

You've got one basic questions answered:

No Hi Cap Mags, PERIOD

As far as answering any of your other questions, it would be my interpretation as opposed to anything factual so I'll stay away from them and let someone that knows address them. Especially when it come to "black guns".

As far as the CCW questions, we have folks that are members of this forum that are VERY familiar with CA CCW. The actual training that your county requires will dictate what they might accept. I'd be suprised if they would accept out of state training as sufficiant. rom your post it sounds like your moving to El Dorado County, so if you haven't discovered the County FAQ yet, you might want to check out the El Dorado County FAQ to see if there are any answers.

Sorry I can't answer many of questions, but there is a wealth of collective knowledge here.

You don't need any to just move into CA with your handguns. If you want to purchase any new ones, you need a Handgun Safety Certificate. Training is not required, you need to pass a 30 question test with at least 23 correct answers. If you have a CO CCW you'll probably do fine with the test. It costs $25 to take the test, there are many gun stores that administer them.

You might try the following link to anwer your questions re: long guns...Ten Percent Firearms, The Firearms Experts... they are a business and will try to sell stuff but ... I know these guys/gal. They try to give honest answers on their website, they are CCW holders/people and straight up folks.... from what I have seen of them...

Placerville huh? Say hi to the incredibly large "kitties" they have there... might want to keep your dogs locked up if you live on the "edge"..... the "cute cuddly kitties" call small dogs..well... appetizers here in California

Yes indeed. If you have cats, make sure that they either come inside at night or that they don't go out at all if you live up in the hills... Coyotes are very, very good at catching and eating domestic cats. Where I work, we usually call roaming domestic (not feral) cats "Coyote Snacks".

There are a few of us on the board that live within walkin' distance of Placerville. Nice place. Good luck!

Well I guess I won't have to look very long to find some shoot'en buddies. I've poked around and it seems idpa is pretty strong in the area as well.

I will keep my 'coyote snacks' indoors =) thanks for the heads up.

I moved here from Boulder in 1995. Don't do it. You have no idea how good you have it in Colorado :-)

But if you must move and if you happen a pick up an HK45C before you move and you find that you just absolutely hate that plastic POS and want to sell it when you get here, I'm about 10 minutes down the road from Placerville and will be looking for a used one for a private party transfer oh probably for the next few years.

Welcome Viking, and best of luck on your migration West! Bombard has great advice on that book, BUY IT! It covers ownership requirements, transportation issues, storage issues, all the basics of gun ownership in CA. It's not as bad a place as the reputation is, although there are some fairly irritating laws on the books, to put it mildly. Many other states have much worse regulations, IMHO.
