Default Creaky OWB holster problem (?)

I have a OWB holster that creaks on my belt and I would like to know if anyone knows of a good way to reduce the creaking noise or make it go away altogether if possible. Every time I take a step or move the creaking noise is more than loud enough to be an obvious tell that I am carrying.

My holster is a Desantis Speed Scabbard that is molded to the shape of my pistol and the maker does not recommend the use of anything product that would soften the leather and make it lose its shape. My holster belt made of horse hide.

Any ideas?

the obvious: something is shifting in order to make the creeking noise.

Is it the gun inside the holster moving or the holster moving on your belt?

Are you using a heavy duty gun belt?

Are the belt loops on the holster too large for the belt being used (i.e. you have a 1.5" loop on holster and using a 1.25 belt) ?

Well, my holster is made for a 1.5" belt. My belt is 1.5". I guess you could say it is a heavy duty gun belt; it's a High Noon Holsters brand Rock Steady belt that is made of two outer layers of horse hide with a middle layer of something like kydex so it is a bit thick and pretty tough but looks like a simple western dress belt.

For the other part of your question - no, the holster does not move. It is very secure so it takes a bit of effort to move it after you buckle the belt. I'll post a picture if the belt and holster being worn when I get a chance if that helps.

take the belt off, (keep your pants on though), holster the gun unloaded (in case you wiggle it so much it falls out) and try and wiggle it or move it and try and re-create the creeking noise while its in your hand. I am thinking maybe the gun is shifting inside.

The gun does not shift at all and it quite secure. That was one thing I checked. When I try to wiggle the holster it definitely creaks as it rubs on the belt. Do I need to put something in between the belt and holster?

Tom, have you tried asking Desantis? It's possible they've had that issue before and have a recommendation. Just a thought.

Good suggestion. I will email Desantis about the creaking. In the mean time, I welcome ideas from everyone here too.

Also, are you sure it's the holster and not the belt?

You can try putting a little baby powder where the belt goes through the loops and on the backside where you belt is against the holster. More than likely that is where your noise in coming from and should solve the problem without compromising the leather molding.

You won't like my answer but here goes: Kydex

Every leather holster I've ever had made some noise. There are some leather dressings that don't really soften, only condition. Like the ones used on auto interiors. I use Lexol on my cars but I've never tried it on a holster. Ask the holster maker first.

I have the same issue every once in a while with my IWB holster. A simple adjustment of placement is all that is needed to fix the noise. By adjustment, I mean pulling my pants up, lifting the holster up, tightening my belt, etc. Normally the noise involved is the kydex belt clips moving around on the belt. Usually this happens after sitting and then getting up, the belt will sort of pop out of the c-clip at the bottom and start rubbing.

Good luck in finding the noise and correcting it. Sometimes it is hard to "adjust" when you are in public places and making the noise. Especially in a quiet place like a bookstore. I've become quite adept in "adjusting" in public when this happens.

That isn't the issue for Tom, the Speed Scabbard has no clips. IIRC

I don't have a picture of it at the moment on my belt, but here is an picture I took of my holster & pistol so you know what I am talking about. I use the outermost holes as most poeple would use. The pistol does not move at all and is very secure when I am wearing it.

I'd use IWB, but I don't really like being stuck in the ribs by it.

I bet what you're hearing is the leather rubbing against the belt - not from sliding but from twisting.

If that's the case, silicon spray or leather conditioner (not the stuff that makes the leather extra soft) might help. Beeswax leather waterproofing conditioner has worked well for me in the past.
