Default XD40 4" vs XD40 Subcompact

Hey all,

I haven't posted in a while.
Wondering what you'll think about carry methods for a 4" XD?
I am 6'3" 240ish and want to be sure I can conceal it properly.
If not, I'm considering trading in my 4" XD for a subcompact model.

I am fairly active so I need something that can really hide it. Don't know if that sounds stupid.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

It all depends on you, and what you find comfortable. I'm a pretty big guy, too -- a little more vertically gifted, and a little less horizontally gifted. While I've never done it, I believe that I could carry a 4" just fine. I have experimented with a full-size 1911, and it conceals pretty well, too, on me.

As far as method of carry, TT Gunleather IWB comes to mind. Actually, it comes to mind every time I put it on. I love my Mike's Special! The 4" might be a little long for the Mike's Special, but the regular IWB will instantly become your favorite carry, I guarantee. Talk to Tim re: the Mike's Special or the regular model.

I carry the full size XD40 right now. I am 6' 2" and about 180#. Most of my clothing covers the gun pretty well. I do have some items that print and I try to avoid wearing them though. All-in-all I don't have too much trouble with concealment with my Comp-tac Minotaur IWB. With a full size, I would highly recommend an IWB unless you are wearing a jacket or coat.

I don't know if the extra 50-60# would help or hinder concealment. I did recently purchase a subcompact Glock G27 so that I would have some options with a much smaller pistol. Still waiting for my TTGunleather Mike's Special for that though.

Good luck.

Keith

ETA: One thing to consider, the compact may be easier to conceal, but it will be more difficult to shoot at greater distances. My target at 45' with the Glock looks like someone hit it with '00 buck. YMMV.

I own both the 4 inch and the 3 in Sub Compact XD models. I haven't received my CCW yet, but I did list the Sub Compact on my application. I purchased the Sub Compact because I love the 4 inch XD. I can shoot the 4 inch model all day without tiring. The Sub Compact definitely conceals better, but it kicks harder. I can still "hit what I'm shootin at", but it takes more time to find the target on the follow up shots. It's a comprimise either way. The Sub Compact is harder to shoot, therefore more practice is required, but the concealment is much better. By the way, I'm 6-4 230 lbs. IWB is the only way I can effectively conceal. 3 o'clock position and low on the belt with a simple clip on leather holster. I haven't tried the Mike's special yet. It appears to ride too high for me as I kinda have the Hank Hill shape and I think the grips would cause an obvious print through clothing. Anybody with some weight wear the Mike's Special?

I'm 6'5", 215. The Mike's Special rides a skosh lower than the regular "REINIWB." It doesn't ride too high at all, and in fact it wouldn't really hurt if it rode a little higher (but I like it where it is). I wear mine with tuckable clips, and it is normally covered by nothing more than a tucked-in dress shirt. Nothing is totally immune from printing, but I've never seen anything that was better.

BTW I carry a Sig P239, 3.6" barrel. Were I to switch to a full-size 1911, I would go with a standard "REINIWB."

I have the Mikes Special, I am 6-3 250 and carry a small frame 1911 Springfield EMP. I carry it between 3 and 3:30 and it is very comfortable standing or sitting, and driving.

I'm 6-0 and 230 ish...very ish....
I carry a 5 in govt. or a glock 20 or an XD 45 tactical....and a two inch .38 in an ankle holster for those spl. moments....
how to hide em?
TT gunleather and Threat Solutions kydex.... big honkin' shirt...loose fittin' britches.... big smile...little guns are easier to hide... big guns are easier to shoot... all other things being equal...I carry the gun to fight with and that dictates what I carry...
the gun is supposed to be comforting not comfortable however if it is comfortable, I will carry it more...

Gato,

What ankle holster do you have for the 2"? I'm in the market for an ankle holster for my Ruger SP101.

I'm 6'1", 240lbs, and I conceal an XD Service .40 4" in a CrossBreed IWB without any issues. It is all about the clothes. If you have a little more around the middle, maybe the .45 compact will be better. Barrel length is rarely an issue (within reason), but the grip on the service or tactical models may protrude if the love handles decide the don't like the extra company. Subcompact is harder to draw in a hurry, and has less holster options. 4", whether in service or compact, should be fine. Shop around for holsters, and try to find a shop with lots of options that will let you try it on first.

Also, look into clothing that is specifically designed around Concealed Carry. 5.11 makes some great stuff, especially the Covert Casual shirts. I have a dozen of them in 2XL, and they work amazingly well.

I have the XD40SC and a crossbreed supertuck and it hides good (5'10" tall and 190lbs). Never tried concealing the 4" but I imagine the big difference would be when sitting if you carry at 4 O'Clock or further back.

When I was back in AZ (Where my CCW is from), I carried my XD .40 4" pretty much everywhere it was legal to do so. I am 6'2" and 220lbs so not too much off from you. I carried mine IWB/Kidney and really had no issues at all, even driving in the GFs Chevy Cavalier. Matter of fact she didn't even know I had it with me most of the time. It was not comfortable for long drives, so would get moved while driving, but for short hops was fine.

That is my test of how comfy a gun is to carry concealed... "Can I sit in a little car and not feel like it is jabbing me in the spleen".

With a good IWB holster, such as the Crossbreed Supertuck I use now, the length/weight of the gun doesn't seem to be that big of a factor.

Get something that attaches to your belt with two clips and distributes the weight over a good-sized area, and that won't bother you. The extra length isn't that big of a deal either, as that is just going down your pant leg. It might make it a little less comfortable when you're driving, but shouldn't affect concealment.
