Default Need a local gun smith

Hi,

I would like to try to find a local gunsmith to install a new safety in my custom Colt 1911. I have some great smiths but they are all out of state so I would like to keep this local. By the way I am in Costa Mesa. My biggest thing is I want someone that does high quality work and hopefully doesn't need my gun for a couple months. Thanks for the help.

Trevor

PS I don't mind driving for someone good.

You guys have been happy with the work that Bolsa has done? I used them for a small job several years ago that they did not do correctly and I had to send it to another smith... Thanks for the help I am only questioning just because of my limited experience.

Installing a manual safety is a fairly straight forward task and any practicing gunsmith should be able to do that.

If you are having a new grip safety installed, there is a little bit more involved due to the timing and the cosmetic of the fit and finish. This is where the smith's reputation is a little bit more important.

A gunsmith is part machinist, part jeweler, part artist. IMHO, Bolsa has done good work for me, at a fair price. I have heard others speak very highly of their work. You are in truth the first person who has given them a bad review, perhaps you could elaborate on what they did that was bad?

Default Best Gunsmith

I have recently had a great experience with John the gunsmith at Evan's Gunsmithing, in Orange. Every one has an experience and an opinion, but as I understand John goes out of his way for law enforcement, military and ccw. I understand Instructor teaches at Evan's.

I had a friend drop his Browning HiPower 9MM off at Bolsa ... was quoted six weeks and in two he was called ... it was done early and very much to his satisfaction.

As a good gunsmith business should do ... the gunsmiths are busy on the machines in the back so do not be offended if you end up talking to the "schedulers" at the front counter. This enables the business to be profitable.... instead of the gunsmith wasting time talking to people about grandad's this and brother's that etc ... please respect their time since the next job they work on may be yours.

The counter guys are helpful with scheduling, but do not expect them to know everything.

I have referred quite a few people to them and have yet to have a complaint ... other than the quoted delivery time... which they tend to beat.

Be sure to ask around .... there are some blacksmiths out there who masquerade as gunsmiths .... there is a difference.

I tend to be more of a blacksmith, so I can recognize my own kind....

Hammer, torch and screwdriver are my favorite tools .....

Default I'm also looking for a gunsmith in Kern Co.

I would like to get my wife's trigger worked on. She has a S&W model 60 and it's got a pretty fair amount of trigger pull. It is her carry weapon and I don't want it to be gone for months. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Locally... Bolsa do good work.. I had a gun there before. For 1911 and you don't mind the drive (Glendale)... King's used to be the best but the owner passed away a few years ago... not sure how good they are anymore but would think they continued the tradition. They specialize in 1911s.
