This is just an idea out of left field, I have NO idea if it will work, but I'd try it.

Try super extra hot water (assuming the clothes will take it). Turn your water heater up as high as it will go, turn off the cold water at the valve to the washer, run as normal. Every cleaning process I know works better at higher temps.

Have you tried automotive hand cleaner that has NO abrasive in it on those items you are willing to wash by hand? I have used Goop hand cleaner with success in that way.

Also, Remington gun cleaner in the little white bottle with the green label does not have a stinky smell like Hoppes does.

Years ago I ran a security (lock, safe, bank vault) business, and would use Simple Green® to get out bad smells from clothes - including once when an owner dropped a gas bomb from his vault door (not a good day).

Add 1/2 to 1 cup (makes a 2-5% solution) of Simple Green to your wash after the tub is filled with water, then do extra rinses (one is usually enough) until no smell remains. If your fabrics retain the Simple Green smell (this happened to me only once) run 'em again with baking soda and it will all be gone.

The only caution with Simple Green is not to dry until its smell is completely gone.

Sorry I didn't suggest this before.
It's been a while since I needed it.

Just got home and looked for the clothes in the washer, they were not there. Looked in the dryer, they were not there also. Looked outside, there they were! I guess my wife put in an empty load of Tide, vinegar, and baking soda, which took the smell out of the washer. She is hanging our clothes outside for now. If that does not work, then the Tide, vinegar, and baking soda combo will be used on our clothes. Do you all know if that will discolor any of the clothes? BTW, the clothes types are darks, so washing them in super hot water would not be an option. Thanks again everyone for all of your help.

Baking soda and vinegar in the same load will give you bubbles and salt.

If you want to use either, use them separately.

I'm not joking about the Simple Green.

Or, you could learn to really really like the smell of Hoppes.
What do you mean, "learn"? Doesn't everyone love it?

No joke, I came home from work the first time my boyfriend was cleaning his gun at my house...he had the entire place opened up but I think I still got high in about 30 seconds - I loved it!

Well, I ran that rag through the washing machine with all of our dark clothes and our clothes reak of Hoppes 9 cleaner after the wash--twice. We ran the washer twice and all of the clothes still reak of hoppes 9. Is there anyway to get that smell out of our clothes? The only problem I can think of is that we use this eco-friendly detergent crap that does not smell very strong.

And no, this is not a joke. However it is funny and sad for my clothes, but true. Thanks for the help and enjoy your funny story today at my expense.
The odor you are smelling is creosote oil mixed with an organic solvent.

Tuff stuff to get out of clothing and frankly, I dont know why you would want to. Ive been smelling it for over 40 years. Nothing like the smell of Hoppes #9 in the morning (or afternoon) it smells like victory!

I have no idea how many washes it took. One day they just didn't smell anymore.

Luckily my wife doesn't blame the guns, she just blames me. I now have to clean all guns outside, and I am not allowed to wash any more of my gun rags.

If what you are doing doesn't work, go to Costco get their liquid cleaner, the one full strength red container, or if you have it, Oxy Clean, even better. Soak the clothes for a several hours in a strong soap/water solution, stirring every once in a while, in large container or bath tub. You can do this twice.
This allows time for the enzimes to break down all components, then rinse with just cold water several times.
Wash on heavy duty cycle and do a two rinse cycle.
Good luck!
