Default TRP modifications

OK, TRP has had nearly 1000 rounds through it so it's time to start modifying it. Today I completed one major mod. It fell under the title "full length guide rod be gone".

Last week in anticipation of the arrival of the TRP I have ordered from Brownelles reverse plug, spring, and shortie guide rod. From those parts I have used exactly.... 0 parts. To start off: the reverse plug I ordered was the wrong one as it was made for a 1911 with a bushing. Whooops. OK, no biggie, I can take appart my one piece setup and reuse that plug. Next came the dillema: original spring or new spring? Hmm.... Since I have taken the 1 piece setup appart and the spring is already off, might as well use the original spring and save the other one for later. Next came the shortie rod. Oh boy... that thing is lethal! After I put it in the spring bowed out and before I was able to do anything I launched it across the room.

After 15 minutes of searching I found it, installed it and assembled the firearm. Felt pretty good, but I was concerned with the shortie rod being hard to control during assembly and dissasembly so I decided to take the TRP appart again. I wasn't too surprised when I saw the spring bow out and start doing weird things as I was sliding the slide off the frame. As soon as I was off the shortie rod wanted to fly again. Yes I was able to control it, yes I caught it but the bowing out of the unsupported spring in the center was a bit of a concern to me: I wanted to replace the 1 piece full length rod setup to make the TRP more field serviceable. As I was contemplating putting the original guide rod in I spotted the full length guide rod I pulled out of my kimber. So without giving it much thought I decided to try and see how it fits. I was pleasantly surprised to see it be short enough to make it easy to remove without need for any extra tools and long enough to support the spring and prevent it from bowing out. So all I really ended up doing was putting a commander sized guide rod into the government setup.

Shoot it to make sure it functions okay. That bull barrel is designed to be used with a full lenght guide rod.

Of course Any excuse to go shooting is a good excuse though I dont think it'll cause any problem. The guide rod I installed is long enough to actually go into the opening of the plug so at it's installed position I'd say it's about 1/4" engage at least.

Here's a picture of the TRP with a light mounted on it

Since it's a home defense/night stand firearm I figured that I need to follow the age old maxim

Thanks for posting. After shooting your baby the other night I ordered one the next day. What a nice gun! I am also going to mount a light. Probably the TLR2.

Some people say they do not like a light on their firearm. As you have to point the muzzle at what you want lit up. But then again nothing stops you from having an extra flashlight just like any other handgun.

I figure having a light and choosing not to use it is a way better option then not having it and needing it.

Well said. And I really enjoyed shooting your TRP. Curious to try it again with the different guide rod set up.

I"ll bring it with me next time to the range. Seeing how the mechanism is setup and how the guide rod sits in the spring which then sits in the plug don't see it feeling any different but... range time will tell
