If I put a firearm back in the safe after a day at the range without cleaning, it gnaws at me until I go back and clean. Now where I falter is I don't really do anything to them if they sit for a while. I only have a couple guns that will go idle for any length of time.

Range guns for the business - they get cleaned when they stop running OR when we do a security firearms class... then we demonstrate cleaning a revolver and an automatic... so two of them get cleaned every 60 days or so...

personal range guns... when I get around to it...but wiped down against rust if it isn't a glock

persoanl carry guns.. Ok.. I'm a little fanatical about that... usually every time I shoot 'em... my 1911 gets used occasionally to fire about 15-20- rounds during initial ccw classes and I don't clean it then ... usually cause it's too late in the evening and I gotta have something I trust to carry loaded home....

The wife has a different spin... she wants to know that they work... so she cleans it BEFORE SHE SHOOTS IT... shoots it.. and then carries it... that way she KNOWS it is gonna work...cause she tore it down, cleaned it and then "test fired" it... YMMV

To let you guys in on a personal issue of mine: I have medication controlled OCD (not like Monk), and absolutely can NOT leave my guns dirty. Like Mike said, it gnaws at me too. Over the years. I have learned what parts need to be wiped, scrubbed, picked, rodded, and swabbed. It saves me time, and by using the same methods every time (similar to the principles of a person search), I know that my guns are clean.

I have friends that bring their guns to me for detailed cleaning, and usually pay me in beer (legal tender in over 100 countries). My next gun related purchase (that isn't a gun or ammo) is going to be an ultra-sonic cleaner.

Any suggestions/experience/horror stories?

So your Wife uses the "Test-Guns" theory that the Military uses? Nice...

Provide us with an address to send the guns for cleaning and the beer for drinking. Anyone with OCD is my vote for a gun scrubber - I'm married to an OCD'er - she has no idea how to clean a gun - but you could eat off of any surface in my house without worries!!

I've left my gun dirty in the safe one night because it was to late to clean it when I got home and had a nightmare about it jamming, I now clean it right after shooting no matter how late.

That is why I am interested in the ultrasonic cleaner. It sounds like a great investment, but I don't know anybody that has been using one for any period of time. I want to know if they really clean as advertised, work as quickly, do a better job than me, and refrain from breaking down the finish/construction of my guns.

If it is really all it is cracked up to be, then it would be a great way to clean my guns after the range, without losing hours of quality time with my son...

My God, you guys are all almost making me feel guilty enough to take my guns out of the safe and clean them on the spot. ALMOST.

I always fear rust in the barrel. Am I crazy? Especially if it's humidy like it has been this last week or so.

They did get to me. I didn't clean any of my guns after my last two trips to the range and my qualification. Now they're all sparkly purtty again. I feel better now!
