Working and making a good living as a smith is not an easy thing to get done. I know half a dozen broke gunsmiths right now. I'm newly retired and just finished setting up another bench. UPS just brought me a couple boxes of AR parts so I'm going to be having some fun.
At the school or the prison... Sorry, couldn't resist.

Welcome to the forum anyways. Sounds like you are about to kick-off some fun with some ARs. Wish you luck.

I prefer to be one of the first two kind and to learn from others' mistakes.

If I lived there I would take the class. No question.

+1 on Lassen if you are lookin' for some part time occsional work...
if you are going to make a career out of it...
Colorado School of Trades - Gunsmithing

I had a gunsmith who worked for me once who graduated from there... he had a good broad base of skills... what he lacked was the application experience ... years of simply working on guns...we hired him essentially right outa school....

Like most colleges... you don't get good at stuff until you work at it... college gives you the ability to learn to do what you want to do when you get out of school...

In application... gunsmithin' school will teach you how to run a mill/lathe etc... how to finish stocks and most importantly how to use a file and then you learn how to really fix stuff when you apply the basic skills and screw stuff up and then have to fix it... QED

Good luck...

If you know Leroy the local rifle guy, he would be a good one to buy some coffee for and pick his brain...you will often find him at Bear Mtn. Sports... I have his card around here somewhere...

Find a JC that offers machine shop classes and learn to use a mill and a lathe. Not real expensive and extremely valuable as a GS.
