I can not remember the exact time line for my license in Kern Co but I did hear from the Sheriff's office about approval very quickly, less than a couple of weeks. I had taken the class before submitting my application. After I received my approval letter I went down and did my fingerprinting and they sent it off to the state for that portion of the approval process. I know you may not want to but, the best thing to do is call the office. I remember the lady at the desk being very helpful and I believe she would be able to tell you the exact process you will need to follow should you be approved.
Good luck, Kurt |

Mike... approvals based upon your application are about 90-120 days... alot quicker than LA... O... you can't get one in LA...
Then you get the letter and take the class... Then they do the DOJ check and that is 30-60 usually depending upon how backed up the DOJ/FBI is.... The good news... you only have to do this part once... the renewal process is just taking the class and they issue you a new permit and you put your thumbprint on it...done...qed Patience is a virtue... They are undergoing some changes and we will likely see some new requirements in the near future... that is mostly on the instructor side though. I am encouraged by what the Sheriff is doing... they are really trying to streamline the process... Think of this like it is a 10 day wait for your new gun... only longer... ![]()

El Gato, what changes are you referring to?
I too turned in my initial paperwork about a month ago. Patiently awaiting approval or disapproval. I have been conversing with one of the local CCW instructors and practicing at the local range. If/when I get approved, I want to be ready for the class. I am also reading In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection by Massad F. Ayoob as recommended by the CCW instructor. Hopefully by the end of the year or beginning of 09 I will have my CCW. |

I don't believe we will see any changes in the number of permits that are issued. I believe we will see the tightening up of the "system"... trainers will be most effected. However, they are very clear that there are some conditions to the issuance of the permit... ie: you must show the permit to a leo when contacted....
I believe, firmly, that the changes will be for the better. They now have a new computer system and are moving forward with the various entities toward pushing the state to implement a plastic credit card style ccw system... The Sgt. in charge is top notch and the Dept. is moving forward to formalizing their program... Moving from 3x5 cards to computerized system is just a first step... I went in and changed a gun on my permit (I kept my permit when my Dept. armed me as a leo) and the new computerized system made it a snap... I will post the changes as I have time and as I am informed...I HAVE A VERY POSTIVE ATTITUDE ABOUT THE DIRECTION THE KERN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS MOVING ![]()

Good to hear!
Thanks for the quick response as well. Any insight as to the current turnaround time for initial approval? I'm right at the one month mark, and I am getting anxious. I have already accepted the 12 weeks, just hoping that it is sooner. |

Just trying to understand this process. 1. The application approval (which is where they look over your Good Cause) in Kern County is 90-120 days. ----Does this include an interview, or if they accept your Good Cause, do you just get an approval letter without a face-to-face? 2. Once you have the approval letter, go take the class 3. Bring approval letter and proof of passing the class back to KCSD and THEN they do the Background check 30-60 days. ----Is this when they do the fingerprinting? 4. Finally you are contacted by the KCSD to come down and get your license, or is it mailed to you? Sorry if I am asking obvious questions, but I wasn't able to find a clearcut step by step for Kern County (like the thread for Fresno).

1. inital application is reviewed and the permit is approved/denied... if denied then the appeal process can start.. 2. get approval letter, take class... ....range time baby!3. yes.. 4. you have to go and get the license... they have to put your fingerprint on it... Be patient... they are formalizing the process... it all takes time... I was astounded at how much progress they have made over the last few months... good work there...
