Welcome aboard, All American. Someone from Santa Barbara Co will be along with an answer.

I believe that the sheriff in Santa Barbara has publicly stated that he does not like the idea of citizens carrying guns.

You are correct. He does believe that and said so publicly.

I live in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County but did not go through the Sheriff Department because I live within the City so I had to apply for my CCW license with the Chief of Santa Maria Police Department.

I was treated with professional attitude by the Chief and Police Department. when I was called in to qualify with my three (3) weapons the Lt was very professional and told me what to do. He also stated that he was an aficionado of hand guns and that he commented on my Browning HP 9mm and my FI Industries model D .380 cal of being very well made but did not actually favored my Raven P25 .25 cal but he stated that I may qualify with all three, which I did. I qualified with these three weapons on 10 May 2007 around 1000 hrs and got a call from the SMPD on 06 June 2007 around 1100 hrs to pick up my brand new CCW license.

I Did this by being honest and sincere, have a great day, later --- Ray

Congrats. on your success.
I do beleive you are very fortunate to have needed to apply through your local PD. I too needed to go through my local pd with success, but my county would have issued if my PD had not. (as long as I had no disqualifiers).

He is so against citizens having guns that SB is one of the few counties (if not the ONLY county) which requires a psychiatric exam as part of the CCW process.

Does this apply to the NEW sheriff, Bill Brown?

I know the previous long term Sheriffs, Anderson and Thomas were anti CCW, but I heard Brown is Pro-NRA and might think different.

I too was able to get my CCW through the city of Santa Maria. From the folks that I have talked to, Sheriff Brown is not much into having private citizens carry, that is a job for peace officers.

Looking at their website, I couldn't even find anything on their CCW policy. That might be a hint at how he views the subject.

Red face Santa Barbara Permit

I too am looking to get my CCW permit in SB. Is it even worth trying or just a lost cause? I am a business owner with a fairly clean record, 1-DUI 8 years ago. Any suggestions would be great.

Cheers

Santa Barbra is a difficult county to be issued in. The more people who try increase the exposure to the issue of CCW. With the new views regarding the individual interpretation may open more doors down the line.

IIRC we have had threads on Santa Barbara issue and possibly one member who may have succeeded. You can't win if you don't play the game.

Maybe another member will chime up with better information for you.
