The police are not required to help you either and the courts have rules that police are not obligated to do so. Some countires including Canada have good samaritan laws where an individual can be prosecuted for not helping a person in need. I don't think we should go to that extreme either, but it's pathetic that you guys think only a COP should help someone in immediate danger, forget the CCW issue as this has nothing to do with a CCW, it's common human decency and I would have helped this woman without a gun.

I think we need to just over look the few who are of the mind set to only protect themselves. There are still good folks out there in the world.

The point, at least for me, is there has to be a priority in life with anything that you do. Everyone's priority is different and different at every stage of one's life. If I was not married and have kids, I would react differently than I do now and probabily jump in and help. But becuase I have a family to protect, my assets to protect, my lifestyle to protect, I will do the best I can to help while not putting anyone/anything I value more than a stranger's life at risk. So for me... 911 is the best I can do for a stranger.

You may say how can I value assets over a human life. Well... to me, my assets are not simply assets. My main job at this time in my life is to protect and PROVIDE for my family. If I have to risk my assets (civil suits) to protect a stranger, I am, in a way, risking my ability to provide for my family. I may loose everything that I own and where would my family be? How will I be able to do my job and provide for my family?

Plus, you never know what situation you are walking into when dealing with strangers. Is it a undercover cop trying to subdue a BG? I will not get involved unless I know the situation 100% and unless you know the parties involved, it's hard to know what the real situation is. Even if it a friend... it is still hard to know but I would make the decision to trust that friend, or not, when the situation present itself.

This may be a situation in regards to being a sheep or a sheepdog. Personally, it is not that simple as we are humans and goes through stages in life with different responsibilities and not simply wait once a year to have wool taken off my back. While I may act on certain situations (i.e. hijacked airplanes where I know I'm toast one way for another)... I'll stay clear of harms way as much as I can and WILL HELP... but within my ability to do so while protecting AND providing for my family. This is my first priority in life at this stage. Once my kids leave me and my wife don't want my lazy azz anymore... it may change and I'll become the protector of the universe. For now... I'm no superman.... I leave that to the LEOs.

And on that note, I think everything that needs to be said on this topic has been. I'm going to lock this thread.
