Default I just found out that Ted Nugent can carry concealed in all 50...

Apparently he has acquired some level of LEO, possibly reserve, that allows him to carry concealed in all 50 states.

I love the guy... "The second amendment is my CCW."...

I wouldn't mind doing some reserve duty to reap those kind of benefits. I'm sure some wheels were greased for him due to his political views on the 2nd amendment along with his celebrity... but it got me thinkin'....

Ted's reserve work is not in California. The San Diego Sheriff's Department is not so lenient with giving reserve status to individuals. They are very restrictive on who would qualify for a CCW based solely upon volunteer work for the Department.

Ted Nugent is a LEO in Michigan. I forgot which department, but he is a deputy sheriff.

As is Chuck Norris.

Edit to add: It's on his biography. Michigan County Sheriff Deputy since 1978.

And Sean Penn is licensed to carry CCW in California

APRIL 30--Here in New York City, it seems that every celebrity--from Howard Stern to Steven Tyler--has been granted a license to carry a concealed weapon. But in northern California, it's the rare Bay Area resident who qualifies to pack a gat. One guy who has passed muster is peacenik actor Sean Penn, who was granted a carry permit last year by the Ross Police Department. In his license application, Penn cited threats that have been directed at him, particularly from an ex-employee whom Penn feared was trying to locate him. The actor said that if the fired assistant found him, "a physical confrontation, possibly involving weapons, would almost surely ensue." As first disclosed by the San Francisco Chronicle, Penn's application acknowledged two arrests and the "recreational use of marijuana," though the 42-year-old performer added that he "has not used any narcotics in the past 20 years."

Then why don't you apply to be a reserve? SDSO and SDPD both are currently accepting applications for reserve positions.

Because that's exactly what any agency is not looking for in a Reserve candidate. The time committment is also way more involved then most people are willing to donate.

I'm pretty sure I'm too old... 53

There is a federal law that enables Nugent to conceal in CA... I can't remember it though...

It's the Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act - Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also known as 18 U.S. Code 926B and 926C.

You should check with the department you would like to apply to. Most no longer have age limits, as long as you can perform the specified duties.

The LEOSA is quite an interesting piece of work. I've heard of very few, if any, incidents where a LEO was carrying under the LEOSA and had to go to court over it. Although it may override agency policy, (to my knowledge) that part of it hasn't been tested in court nor is it explicitly spelled out in the act that it does go that far. So, until someone becomes an agency policy test case, although you'd have some immunities to prosecution, you can still be disciplined by your agency. If your agency doesn't care... no problem. If your agency does... oops.

It would be interesting to see if I can get a CCW once I get hired as a reserve officer. I have my level III right now, I am gonna apply and see where I can get getting in the door with a department. CCW is just one of the perks.. Supposedly, sheriffs and police chiefs have really no beef issuing to those who are reserves with the department.. According to some manuals I have read, after one your of service it's pretty much shall-issue..

It all depends on the agency. Having spent 4.5 years of my life as a Reserve I wouldn't suggest doing it for the CCW. That's not the right reason.

Very true. Most agencies will discover if getting a CCW is your true motivation. If not in the interview, then in the background or the psych.

There was one real winner in my academy class. While on lunch break he was chatting with some classmates and said the only reason he wanted to be a reserve was so that he could carry a gun and pick up chicks. He was gone by the end of the day.

I've heard Nugent on talk shows talking about doing raids with the US Marshall's. I don't know that he is actually part of their team or what, but I'd think that if they "deputized" him or whatever they do, that might explain things. Surely Federal LEO's should be able to carry in all 50 states.
