Default Background Check's on prior military?

Just curious of the military (or prior) members here.

Having a background check for a security clearance and all...
and having it re-verified every 10 years of continued service,

will this help or hinder with the CCW background check...?

I'm not current or former military, but it neither helps nor hinders. You have to go through a background check even if you've just gone through one for something else. They're completely separate.

Never really thought about it. For sure we're in the system, some probably more than others. Hopefully its a positive.

It doesn't factor in.. They run you through Ca-DOJ and the FBI. They are looking for arrest and convictions.

If a person were seperated from the military with a discharge other than honorable, would that effect his application?

Hmmm... just something that crossed my mind (short trip).

zero arrest and/or convictions.

I DO think a disshonorable or "Big Chicken Dinner" (Bad Conduct Discharge) would be a bad thing.

I'd think that those types of activities in your past would hold some weight in an interview as to your character, but if what CCWI states is absolute (and I have no doubt of his knowledge on the subject) then it would neither help nor hinder.

My military service required me to have what was then referred to as a SECRET clearance and later a WHITE HOUSE clearance (1970s POST Viet Nam era), but neither was mentioned during the process nor was my military service record.

"Big Chicken Dinner"?

As far as his character goes, absolutely. But it has nothing to do with the background check they run.

Wouldn't the military records be in the FBI data base? Article 15s, minor UCMJ offenses, etc.

Even if they are:

And I think the point of his question was not whether your military record will help or hinder, but whether the fact that you've been through a background check for the military would help or hinder. It doesn't.

The background check for the CCW doesn't intersect a security clearance investigation at all. Passing (or failing) one doesn't make a difference for the other.

It's the CCW background is actually tighter than an EBI for the criminal background check, but it doesn't go into the applicant's finances like an EBI does.

Well.... i have been told i was a real "character" at times...

Heck... i havent even had a speeding ticket in over 20 years...???

I just wish i could find some of my old troops (for character letters)...
i've moved so much and lost contact with them...
(the sucky part of the military... having great friends, and having to say goodbye...)

Well... i will admit that i had a few choice words with a "Reservist" in command... (who thought Reservist had REAL JOBs to get back to, while trying to get me and my active duty counterparts the hell out of Iraq) and was offically counceled (on paper).

but doing the right thing for the right reason... shouldnt be a BAD thing.
As my troops have always given me the earned respect (vs by rank) for standing up for my guys (and girls) no matter who i had to piss off.

its a tuff life... time to hope the next generation is ready to "carry on".
