Default 1911 Spontaneous Discharge in MRI machine

--> Spontaneous Discharge of a Firearm in an MR Imaging Environment
Includes 1911 pictures.
Quote:
[...]a firearm spontaneously discharged in a 1.5-T MR [Magnetic Resonance] imaging environment with active shielding. [...]

An off-duty police officer went to an outpatient imaging center (not affiliated with our institution) in western New York State to have an MR imaging examination. [...]

The officer notified the technologist that he was carrying the weapon before entering the MR dressing room. The technologist told the officer to take the gun with him. The technologist intended to meet the officer in the MR patient waiting area before the examination and secure the weapon in that room, where he felt it would be safe. However, the officer apparently misunderstood and took the gun into the MR suite. The technologist was entering the officer's personal data into the computer and did not see him entering the MR suite.

Once the officer was inside the MR suite, the gun was pulled from his hand as he attempted to place the gun on top of a cabinet 3 ft (0.9 m) away from the magnet bore. The gun was immediately pulled into the bore, where it struck the left side and spontaneously discharged a round into the wall of the room at the rear of the magnet. [...]

An unsuccessful attempt to remove the gun from the magnet resulted in the gun being pulled to the right side of the magnet [...]

At the time the weapon discharged, it was reportedly in a cocked and locked position; that is, the hammer was cocked and the thumb safety was engaged to prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin. A live round was in the chamber. [...]

When the firearm was removed from the magnet, the gun was still in a cocked and locked position. An empty cartridge was found in the chamber. [...]

The gun flying out of his hands reminds me of a Jedi Knight from Star Wars trick. But yeah I remember this story and discussion from long ago.

It was in this thread where it was discussed.

It was discussed in that thread but it came up before that. The thread began with a guy dropping a brand new Springfield out of his backpack while he was riding his motorcycle.

Me too... He claimed wind friction from the high speed made his backpack unzip and allowed the XD for fall out.

IIRC, It was a brand new XD he had just pick up. He circled back and found it (most of it anyway) laying next to the center K-Rail....

Lessons here? Stay away from backpack while speeding on a motorcycle, and, don't take your weapon along for an MRI... And if you do either one, hope it never become a feature story in the local news.

No it was a brand new 1911 still in original case. Not a XD. It was cocked in locked but unloaded.

It was also run over several times.

You're right... I should have known better what with the "cocked and locked" thing....
