Does the COE just apply to C&R coleecting or does it wave the 10 day wait period on any firearm you intend to purchase? I looked over the DOJ site and it seems to apply to everything. Anyone here have a COE and any experience buying with it?

A C&R with a COE is really only good for someone who's into collecting firearms in a fairly big way. I doubt a C&R w/ COE will have any (if any) impact on your need for a CCW.

It only applies to C&R long gun purchases only. Assuming you have a COE and a type 03 FFL. For any handgun, it's still the 10 day wait.

I have a C&R FFL and the Certificate of Eligibility is simply so you can buy a long gun over 50 years old without the 10 day wait and minimal paperwork.
Our self-serving politicians don't trust us law abiding citizens despite the Federal DOJ check we must pass to buy handguns uder C&R so to 10 day wait applies. It all boils down to the fact that you have to pay fees for handguns and they get a percentage of it. Money-money-money is the name of their game we must play.

A FFL03 and COE will allow you to cash and carry all C&R guns from the dealer. You a get a free pass on the handing demo for C&R handguns. It will also bypass the 1 in 30 day rule on all handguns. If you travel and collect then it is worth getting a COE.

With my C&R and COE I can have a C&R handgun or rifle shipped directly to my door no waiting. A C&R handgun still has to be registered but I have two weeks to send them paperwork and $19 - but no waiting to get it home.
In theory the COE also exempts you from the one handgun a month law or so I'm told. The problem is that nobody, least of all gun shops, understands what a COE does. Even the state's one and only go-to person isn't entirely sure. Most shops will just look at you like you're from mars when you show your COE. Expect most to have to make somewhere between two and six phone calls before you walk out the door with your new oldie & moldy. One cool part is all of the C&R/dealer discounts that you get from the big online parts and accessories stores. I've saved as much as $100 on one order. The down side is that C&R weapons multiply like rabbits in your safe. That's the only way I can think of that I wound up with three M38 and three M44 Mosin-Nagants this year. ![]() Last edited by sholling : 07-13-2008 at 10:13 PM. |

With a COE you can buy multiple handguns on one day. You still have to wait 10 days to pick them up though.

Ok now I see why this is a CCW forum. You can not receive any modern handgun, including C&R, with a FFL03 in the state of CA unless it goes through a FFL01 dealer. The self registration at $19 is when you are out of the state and buy a C&R handgun and bring it back into the state. Vintage nobody cares about, around the turn of the century time. It also should be noted that there are some long guns that are C&R which are also less than 50 yrs old and they have to be transferred through a FFL01 in CA. Any long gun 50 yrs plus is just cash and carry if PPT but 10 day wait at a dealer, unless COE and FFL03.
