Hi BonoVox,
Good to be in on this site. It seems to be properly focused on issues at hand for CCW. I am one of those few CCW in Wine Country. Seemed easy at the time, but after reading all of the news and views here I'm surprised how difficult other counties are in approving CCW for folks. I have a couple of out of state permits and carry when I travel. I carried forever it seems back in early 70's and then one day was in a shop and learned that there were some new rules/laws in the 90s that I wasn't up on - so that launched me into the application mode. Wow - I was in peril with the good guy's and had no idea. What was the basis - an over-reaction to gang issues by the senate and assembly to the point of curtailing the citizen right to survival? Anyway, I like Humboldt. We'll see what comes up. Be watchful, be prepared and be safe. |

Welcome aboard.
Most or our more rural counties issue more readily than the populated counties so aquiring a permit in Humbolt should not be difficult. Probably the most important part of the applocation is your Good Cause reason for it. Think it over and ask for help down the line when you are ready to apply. Good Luck. spc |

Welcome CenterX. Keep one thing in mind, you can't "transfer" your CCW, you need to apply at your new place of residence and be approved, in order to get one issued there.

Welcome!!!
I have a friend in the same situation you are in. He is an emergency room doctor in his last few months prior to retirement, and bought a place in Arcata for his retirement. I have visited him at his new residence. My impression is that the people in that city look to be very environmentally responsible, that is good, along with that comes a progressive attitude, I visited Humbold Co. State U. I do not know what the local sheriff is like, but the people then again might be too "progressive" to feel comfortable around guns. I hope that I am incorrect about these assumptions. Anyway, if you do not try then You will never know....if you don't shoot you don't score. Good luck, welcome again. Let us know how it goes. |

If you have a permit from any county in California, Humbolt will re-issue.
Just don't go to the Plaza with a gun, people there don't like them.

Humboldt County has been described on another website as "almost shall issue" or something to that effect. As a resident of Humboldt County with a CCW issued by Sheriff Phelp, I tend to agree with this description.
The training requirement is reasonable and the Sheriff's Office includes a list of approved local instructors as part of the CCW Application Packet. The staff at the Sheriff's Office in Eureka that process CCW Applications are very knowledgeable, professional, and seem to go out of their way to help. You still need a reasonable Justification Statement but the interview is used primarily, in my opinion, to determine your maturity and emotional stability. While I was fully prepared to defend my Justification Statement, it was not necessarry as the content of my statement never came up during the entire interview. My weapons were inspected and the serial numbers and range certification documentation were verified against what I put on the application. I recieved initial approval after the interview. Final approval occurs upon completion of the State and Federal Background checks, assuming you pass both. In my case final approval occured in less than 15 days. This may be due to the fact that I picked the right time of year or to my former occupation and past positive interactions with the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office, however. As a matter of course they will likely quote "30 - 60 days" for final approval/disapproval. Good luck to you in your endevours.
