And finally

Dear Thaves,

Thank you for contacting Amtrak.

We do apologize but we do not have a location where
you would be able to check your firearm through as check baggage when traveling on Amtrak.

We hope this information is of assistance for you.

Sincerely,
William

While the original post is asking about Amtrak, I confess I've been looking for info on Metro Link, OCTD and RTD.
Amtrak may be a different animal altogether. The more I think about it, I'm leaning toward it being Federally Regulated. I think we all need to be careful with this.
The "Amtrak Police" are probably feds of one kind or another since they are employed in different states.
http://www.senate.gov/comm/judiciary...23&wit_id=3277
The TSA website also talks about getting more involved in rail transport. TSA: Railroads

More checking to do.
Maybe THaves could get a phone number or e-mail address for the "Amtrak Police" and we could get the scoop from them?

Thank you for contacting us.

Amtrak's policy regarding weapons is as follows:

FIREARMS AND WEAPONS ON BOARD TRAINS

1. IT IS AMTRAK'S POLICY THAT ONLY QUALIFIED ACTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS EMPLOYED BY A LOCAL, STATE, FEDERAL OR RAILROAD LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY ON OFFICIAL BUSINESS
BE PERMITTED TO CARRY HANDGUNS OR SMALL WEAPONS (NOT EXPOSED OR NEEDLESSLY DISPLAYED) ABOARD AMTRAK TRAINS.
.
2. A "QUALIFIED ACTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER" IS DEFINED AS AN EMPLOYEE OF A GOVERNMENT AGENCY OR RAILROAD WHO:
.
- IS AUTHORIZED BY LAW TO ENGAGE IN OR SUPERVISE THE PREVENTION, DETECTION, INVESTIGATION, PROSECUTION OR THE INCARCERATION OF ANY PERSON FOR ANY VIOLATION OF LAW,

- HAS STATUTORY POWERS OF ARREST,

- IS AUTHORIZED BY THE AGENCY TO CARRY A FIREARM,

- IS NOT THE SUBJECT OF ANY DISCIPLINARY ACTION BY THE AGENCY,

- MEETS THE STANDARDS, IF ANY, ESTABLISHED BY THE AGENCY WHICH REQUIRE THE EMPLOYEE TO REGULARLY QUALIFY IN THE USE OF A FIREARM,

- IS NOT UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR OTHER INTOXICATING OR HALLUCINATORY DRUG OR SUBSTANCE, AND

- IS NOT PROHIBITED BY FEDERAL LAW FROM POSSESSING A FIREARM.

3. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS A NON-LAW ENFORCEMENT INDIVIDUAL PERMITTED TO CARRY A FIREARM ABOARD AMTRAK TRAINS.

.
4. FIREARMS, AMMUNITION AND/OR OTHER WEAPONS, WHETHER OR NOT PACKAGED, ARE PROHIBITED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE OR ON THE PERSON AT ALL TIMES, EVEN IF THE PERSON HAS A PERMIT TO
CARRY. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS, OTHER THAN AS STATED IN SECTIONS 1 AND 2.

5. FIREARMS, AMMUNITION AND OTHER WEAPONS ARE NEVER PERMITTED IN CHECKED BAGGAGE OR IN AMTRAK EXPRESS.

We hope this information is helpful.

Sincerely,
Barbara

True. I was thinking about taking the train up to Goleta, to see my brother, but it looks like it's back to the "101".

Thanks but it sounds like they'll just refer us to rules 3, 4 & 5.

Kind of disappointing but I'd rather go by air anywhere too far to drive.

Precisely why there is no way in hell I will ever set foot on a train, for any reason.

You better take it easy on that one. Remember your Cal CCW is not good in Oregon or Washington. Even a Florida/Utah combo is no good in Oregon. Also they might have different state laws that you need to watch for.
