Default NV Renewal Recommendations

It’s almost time to renew NV. Any recommendations for instructors in the Reno area?

Thanks in advance.

I use Sierra Firearms Academy: Sierra Firearms Academy

Highly recommend! My California sheriff accepted their cert also... My instructor was retired Reno PD range master and we shot at the Washoe range in the private LEO area.

I just dug up my original NV cert and it was completed through SemperFirearms. John did an excellent job.

My paper expires late November so I need to re-up late Oct / early Nov. Just noticed that the renewal course is only 4 hours. I wonder if the Washoe Sheriff’s office stays open late enough to accept renewals so the entire process can be completed in one day?

If you take your renewal in the AM I am sure you could get into the Sheriff's office early enough.

Your new permit will be good for 5 years as of 10/07. A much better deal.

My advice... Dont renew it... Get Utah or Florida instead and carry in Nevada on them.

My preference is to obtain a non-resident directly from the states I frequently travel in, rather than rely on a “3rd party” non-resident from FL or UT.

For me, I wanted Nevada, I just go to a guy, take the UT and/or FL class and send in the paperwork after i get the finger cards done. easy, effective and always a good time in the proccess.

As BV said. To each their own.

Nevada supports my right to carry as a non-res. and I will support them directly for that. Kinda like buying your guns from CCWI because he trains you or vise-versa,,, we support him.

I do have a Utah permit as well, but at the whim of a states authorities, reciprocity or honoring of another permit can change. I am also a seasonal resident in Nevada and support my Storey co. Sheriff Jim Miller for signing my permit.

Default Nevada permit

I had a Nevada permit, but I let it expire since I also have a Florida permit.

Got both permits at the same time, but the Nevada was good for 3 years and the Florida for 5.

Of course, the fun part of the Nevada permit is that I had to qualify with all the guns I wanted on the permit, and the Nevada qualification meet Florida's standards also.

Last time I had 9 guns listed on my permit. There is only enough room for 18 on the back of the card.

How friendly is Washoe county. I asked the clerk what would happen if I had 19 or more guns. He told me that they would make a additional card.

Told Clerk I was going to get a Florida permit, he made me an extra set of fingerprints, no charge.

I had to ask, what the highest number of guns on a permit. At the time, 36.

John was my instructor as well, he made it an interesting day. IIRC, there is generally a wait at the SO in Reno and it can take a while, you can make appointments on Wednesdays though. After taking the class, I went to the Mt. Rose Substation near Incline Village, in and out in no time. If you take the class in the morning, you should be able to hit the station on your way home. I also agree with you on the NV permit, I have the UT as well, but since I spend more time in NV than any other state, I feel better with a local permit.

Agree. However, if there’s ever a need to prove I’m certified to CCW in states I frequently travel in (I'm about 70 miles from the NV border), I want the most expedient explanation that leaves no doubt in the mind of an LEO. I want to avoid games such as “We have reciprocity with FL/UT resident CCW, however I don’t believe we honor FL/UT non-resident CCW. I’ll need to confiscate your firearm until this is settled.” Ultimately, after a bunch of time and money, the law is the law.

SPC raises another valid point. For states that I routinely travel in, I don’t mind directly supporting their non-resident CCW.

For the record, I also have FL for those states less traveled.

The Incline Village Substation of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office has the primary responsibility of providing law enforcement, search and rescue… An administrative clerk is responsible for processing work cards, fingerprints, Concealed Weapons Permits (CCWs), and civil process as well as assisting in case preparation.
Great tip. Many thanks!

Anybody interested in joining an early a.m. private class w/ John for renewal, on a weekday in late Oct. / early Nov.?

My renewal date is in early Nov., but I re-uped last year so I am good to go for another 4 1/2 years with the new law. Thanks for the offer though. I waited for the Oct 1st date last year so I would fall under the new 5 year non-res. to take effect. Our permits (wife and I) took 4 or 5 months because of the new state rules getting straightened out.

This was my wife's first Nv. permit, my 2nd renewal. Our Storey Co. issuer was great about keeping us informed regarding the delays and I was able to carry on my Utah in the meantime.

I only wish California handled our permitting process like Nv.
