Default John Wayne Pick Up

I am picking up someone from John Wayne Airport tonight. I will not be getting out of the car, just pulling up outside of the baggage claim are. Do I need to disarm before arriving at the airport?

Thank you!

Some people will tell you yes, some people will tell you no. I'll just say that there is no penal code that says you cannot carry in your car when driving through there. They are just not allowed in to the sterile area.

But.. the sterile area gets extended to the outside of the airport if they have the security checkpoint setup.

The sterile area never changes in that case. If that were the case, they wouldn't let you enter the airport with your firearm locked in your baggage.

I work near LAX, so I often am asked to pickup or dropoff people; I lock my gun in the COM case, Just to be safe. I really am not sure if I have to lock the gun up, but why deal with a misunderstanding, especially since the airport police are basically suffering from extreme boredom, I do not want to provide entertainment for them. YMMV I guess we need a test case, perhaps you would like to volunteer?

At John Wayne they are usually just pissy. I think they must hate that duty. Not that anyone would be happy having to chase drivers away from the curb constantly. Must be like trying to keep flies off $#!+.

when I am traveling to any airport to pick up or drop off; as soon as I get in the car I lock my gun in my COM case and put the mag in my pocket.

I do this even if I never get out of my truck. I don't want to be a test case.

Also remember the OC Airport is OC Sheriff's territory. If for some reason you print or your firearm is exposed to them and you cause a scene. Well.......

By OC muni code, loaded guns are out. Don't step on the curb, you are then owned.

Had to look it up:

Quote:
CODIFIED ORDINANCES
County of
ORANGE, CALIFORNIA
Sec. 2-1-53. Rules of conduct.

(i) No person, except peace officers, an authorized post office or Airport employee or a member of the armed forces of the United States on official duty, shall carry any weapon, explosive or flammable material on or about his person, openly or concealed, on the Airport without the written permission of the Airport Director. This Section shall not apply to persons carrying firearms in cases, broken down or unloaded when said firearms are being transported by air. For the purposes of this section, a weapon includes all those listed in California Penal Code Sections 12000-12654.
Does the "Airport" include the roads or you are not considered to be "on the Airport" until you step on the curb?

I can just picture this case:

The safe thing is to unload and stow the weapon before crossing MacArthur. I was just wondering what is the significance of CCWI's statement regarding stepping onto the curb.

The road is a gray area under a yellow condition. Under orange and red, it is not.

Reading the code again, the specific code does not apply to unloaded weapons being transported by air. So, is stowing the unloaded gun in an unattached box in the car sufficient to not constitute "on or about his person"?
