Default Carrying a CCW permit copy

I read the FAQ about carrying the original vs. a copy and called the Mendocino County SO to confirm what I had been told by my instructor. It is ok to carry a copy of a Mendocino County permit, and in fact the copy can be shrunk to a more manageable size and laminated.

If you haven't done it already, I suggest you read this FAQ again. The point is, you don't want a lengthy investigation, waiting for the LEO to verify the copy. That's why the original is highly recommended, despite what any agency says. Just my $.02.

I carry a copy (stamped "Copy") with the registration for my car in each glove box and in my fanny pack holster.... I also carry the ORIGINAL in my wallet... The reason being if Im in a mugging situation against more than one person (A situation Im well acquainted with) its very LIKELY I will comply and give up my wallet, especially if they have the upper hand... When I then call the police to report the crime, at least Ive GOT SOMETHING to explain why I have a concealed gun....

Obviously there is a myriad of scenarios (They take my wallet and and they then try to kill me at which point I shoot one and the other takes off with my wallet; I lose my wallet... etc)...

When I picked up my license, I was told I could laminate it but not carry a copy. I wouldn't laminate mine because how is the LEO supposed to know it is an original if he can't tell what kind of paper it is on. That is, if the LEO knows what to look for. The same stands true for a copy. Don't carry one as your primary license to show to LEOs. Although the one LEO that I had to show mine to, didn't even take it out of the little plastic thing I had it in.

And as RD suggested, I would carry one or more as a back up in case your's is taken in a situation he mentioned. Red stamp it COPY just so they know.

I did read the FAQ, the point of which is the Leo may call for verification, after which the issuing agency might question why a verification is necessary. ("Some permits have been pulled!") Obviously MCSO is not going to give me any static about it. Other issuing agencies might not be so reasonable. Don't laminate an original because if it is amended, to include or delete weapons for instance, it has to be able to be typed on.

Do it any way you want. CCW info is available 24/7 in the unlikely event that a Leo questions my permit's validity.

Btw the original from MC is regular paper. It sits right next to my passport in the safe. Until they make these things better, to survive a trip through the washer (or even more dangerous, living 6 inches from my buttcrack), there it will stay.

Actually, there is a member on this site that can confirm these will make it through a wash cycle.

Carry the original. Save yourself the grief of a stop and hold investigation.

Whatever. Have fun replacing it or modifying it when it gets trashed.

MY point was that in MY county, I am NOT going to lose my permit because a Leo enquires about its validity with my issuer, which was the POINT of the FAQ. If anyone wants to respond to that point, fine, otherwise I have to say, as Taxman said, ironically enough because HE didn't respond to my point, READ THE FAQ. Ah the internet.

OK. I'll take a stab at it. It's also perfectly legal here in OC. In fact, per the Penal Code, it's legal throughout the state. However, what is legal and what is advisable, aren't necessarily the same.

The point of the FAQ is that it isn't advisable to laminate or carry a copy. You may not ever have a problem with doing that when you're traveling in your county. But what if you're outside your county? Why open yourself up to the possibility of (at the very least) being detained longer than would otherwise be the case while the LEO in question verifies that your license is valid?

I carry mine folded up behind my DL in my wallet. I've never had it fall apart or need to be replaced during the two years it's valid. Unless you're constantly taking it out and folding/unfolding it, it shouldn't be an issue.

That said, I wish this state would go to a plastic ID card format.

I agree with RD's logic that a clearly marked copy is a good thing to have in addition to the original. That would be true even if/when we go to plastic cards. If you ever end up with your gun but - through unavoidable circumstances - without the original, the copy is better than nothing.

Heck, I'd be tempted to laminate a copy into my grips.

Why the attitude???
You posted a thread and people commented. That's what we do here.

By the way... What was your POINT? That the FAQ was wrong or that you had new information to add?

If you have a POINT, make it. And when you do, maybe you should understand that others may have a different opinion... Get use to it.

I've had modifications made to my permit. Usually adding or changing firearms.
In each case, different agencies, they typed a new permit and took the current one. They would type or write modification or duplicate and the date on the new permit.
