Default CCW Saves Innocent Lives

--> Looser Gun Laws May Save Lives
Quote:
[...]Cope was working as a manager in a financial services office on a hot Friday afternoon in July 2006. He was alarmed to see, as he looked outside into the parking lot of the small shopping center where his office was located, one man chasing another across the lot and according to the Associated Press, brandishing a bloody kitchen knife over his head "like something in a serial killer movie."

The man with the knife was Elartrice Ingram, a 21-year-old disgruntled Schnucks supermarket employee who, moments earlier, had entered the nearby supermarket and stabbed eight innocent people using two kitchen knives. Another man tried to escape outside as Ingram pursued him into the parking lot, carrying his already bloodstained knife.

Cope saw all this and what he did next is notable, especially in this age of declining personal responsibility and common sense. Cope retrieved his gun, a 9mm pistol, from the glove box of his pickup truck, and used it to subdue Ingram, disarm him and save the life of his intended ninth victim. "He saw my gun and that was pretty much it," Cope (who kept Ingram subdued until police arrived) told the Associated Press.

Cope used his gun to save lives and prevent a crime. He was not a police officer or in the military. He was just an ordinary citizen who owned a handgun for self-defense purposes and, on July 21, 2006, was able to save a life.

The example of Cope is not a rare one. According to a 1993 Gallup survey[...]

My opinion on this one is not same one shared by you guys. I think the guy in the office building is an idiot and is lucky he is not dead.

Why didn't he call the police? This story makes us CCW proponents look very bad. This is exactly why people dont want us to carry guns... they think everyone will be running around like vigilantes.

What if I happend to be cruising by the supermarket and I now see a man with gun standing in the parking lot... should I pull my gun and point it at him? Maybe he will tell me he is a CCW holder... should I believe him?
Looks to me like he is threatening the poor man on the ground who no longer has a weapon.

C'mon people... call the police and be a good witness unless your own life is being threatened and you cannot flee. Sheesh!

It could also be argued that if he didnt do this act, there would have been at least one more victim. Yes I agree chasing a BG could turn out in a bad way, but in this situation not confronting him would have most likely caused another inocent victim to be stabbed and possibly another life lost.

I'm sure the person that was saved is glad the guy didnt just sit and watch from behind a window.

I' glad the story turned out positive. But... I for one will be very cautious engaging or butting my nose in situations like this. The circumstances may seem very clear cut after the fact... but may be hard to judge at the time.

For me... unless myself, my family or close friends are being chased... I'll call the cops. Mainly becuase what you see may not be what is going on and if it is a guy with a gun chasing after another guy... it might be an undercover cop chasing a BG.

As for the story... it might of been a parent pulling a bloody knife from his kid and chasing after the killer. The point is... you just don't know the whole story.

All good points and I am with you. That is one of the things that really opened my eye when I started researching CCW and then went to the training class. Mind you own business because you just never know what is actually going on in any given situation.
