Burning marijuana leads police to pot house

By Sandy Louey - Bee staff writer
Published 2:20 pm PDT Monday, April 23, 2007

The smell of burning marijuana led Elk Grove police to an indoor pot farm Saturday.
Elk Grove police arrested Kevin Luong, 43, on suspicion of producing or cultivating marijuana, conspiracy and obtaining unauthorized utility service in excess of $400.
Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a K-9 officer smelled the odor of burning marijuana in a neighborhood near Power Inn Road and Blue Maiden Drive, according to police.
Police officers spotted a large plume of smoke coming from the chimney of a home in the 8400 block of Felton Crest Way. Luong, who let police into the home, said he was burning firewood. The police could not find firewood.
Marijuana was discovered on the tile in front of the fireplace and there was a large amount of marijuana ash in the fireplace, according to reports. A large number of marijuana plants was found growing in four rooms on the second floor, according to a police report.
Luong, who is ineligible for bail, is scheduled to be in court Tuesday.
Police spokesman Christopher Trim said Monday that the case was still under investigation and that the department's street crimes unit was still going through the home. He said officers don't know why the marijuana was being burned in the fireplace.
A tally of the marijuana plants and their street value wouldn't be available until Tuesday, he said.
Trim said officers don't know yet if the latest indoor pot operation is connected to the network of indoor marijuana operations uncovered in the Sacramento region last year.
Federal Drug Enforcement Administration officials say the 41 houses in Elk Grove, Sacramento and Stockton raided last year are thought to be linked to a Bay Area-based organized crime ring. Fifteen of those houses were in Elk Grove.

No matter the number of Laws, LEOs, Judges or Jails. Nothing keeps us safer than the inate stupidity of the criminal.

I've heard the saying "We don't outsmart them, they outdumb us."
