Like the title to this thread says, "I earned my CCW today!!"

I came to CalCCW in June, by way of a recommendation from a Firearms Trainer. I spent a day or two lurking around and eventually registered. Reading the threads and learning from the valuable information on this board combined with my own research and gave me the confidence to go forward and apply for a CCW permit.

My timeline went like this:
Preparation/Research: 6/1/07 – 6/30/07
Initial OCSD Interview: 7/2/07
Approved for Further Processing: 7/17/07
Live Scan/ Finger Print: 7/28/07
Required CCW Course Completed: 8/7/07
OCSD Safety Inspection: 8/13/07
Permit Issued: 8/16/07

By my calculations, that's 45 days from interview to issue.

Many folks helped me along the way including several LEO's, an Attorney and other CCW permit holders, but I believe my success, and the speed with which I sailed through the process, can be attributed to CalCCW, the Founding Members, and specifically CCWInstructor, Greg Block.

I had the need for a CCW and the "Good Cause" was mine and mine alone, but Greg (CCWInstructor) and the others helped me make my case and I believe, sail through the process without a problem.

I'd be remise if I didn't mention the good folks at OCSD and Sheriff Mike Carona. Sheriff Carona's position on 2nd Amendment Rights, and, the professional and cooperative spirit of the OCSD staff, needs to be complemented.

Thanks everyone for the help and support.

Rick, you did something that most folks should do when thinking about applying for a CCW -- investigate. Read. Dig.

Good work.

Congratulation!! You are very lucky it only took you 45days.

I started mine in March 2006, denied by PD in June 2006, applied to SO, denied in August 2006, contemplated in suing for civil rights violation, then realize I had other option like change residency,(also did received a phone call from CCWI during the time I was thinking of suing). I took the easy out since I already have a second residence in another county. I just switched my primary residence, DL, voting registration & etc. Then I applied again, sent application in June 2007, interviewed, live scan and photo in July and picked up my permit yesterday. One year and seven months.
I must warn others, it must be a legitimate residence as they will check and verify.

Come on tell the truth, your primary now was actually your house all along. Your old primary was never yours, you were shacking up with your girlfriend, it was her house all along.

I still remember the phone call. Yours was a legal and proper change back to original.

Default OCSD Renewal CCW Interview 8-21-07

Howdy:

I had my renewal OCSD CCW interview with Melissa Soto today. I set this appointment last week for 8:30 am this morning since I had to go over to the State Board of Equalization to obtain a temporary Orange International Street Fair- Labor Day Weekend sales (sell roasted corn-bottled water) permit for my Orange North Rotary Club. After obtaining the BOE sales permit, I called Melissa to make sure my appointment was OK since I was running a bit late due to BOE wait time and she said "come on down"!

As you all know, there's Deputy a Sheriff who is the "gate" keeper prior to entering OCSD offices etc. One has to sign in, show photo ID and receive a vistors "tag". After requesting the Professional Standards Division (didn't mention Melissa), DS Kevin Obrien asked me if I was renewing my CCW permit? I was surpirsed and I said "do I have CCW permit renewal written all over me"? He laughed and said no but he noticed paperwork I had with me, put two and two together and surmised I was there to renew since I wasn't nervous! "First timers" are always nervous, you aren't and have an air of confidence!

He then asked me why I carry and I started to beat around the bush since I didn't want to give him a direct answer! After a few sentences he said "you carry because you can" and asked when I carry? Like the American Express Card, I don't leave home without it was my answer! He said, "good" and told me to proceed into the PSD.

After handing my paperwork and CA Drivers License to the PSD counter gal, a wait of 10 minutes, Melissa approached and asked me to follow her to the interview room. She had my CCW application, requested documenation, recomendation letters etc in her hands and returned my CA Drivers License to me. Melissa told me she appreciated the CCW application was typed thus easy for her to read. All paperwork was in order, copies easily read and the interview would have lasted maybe 15 minutes if it weren't for the fact I had to explain a particular shooting activity I compete in on a regular basis. I thought Melissa was very professional and asked quality questions.

How did my interview go? I thought well and I've already qualified with three weapons listed on my current permit plus taken the necessary 4 hour classroom time. My permit expires in the latter part of September thus hopefully my renewal will take place prior to my expiration date since my original CCW approval process took 114 days! My ultra fine fingerprints had to be manually reviewed by the CA Department of Justice but the fingerprint department failed to notify the firearms division I needed a background check!! Without the necessary fingerprint process, my "blessing" should I be approved, should take lots less time! I'll keep you posted

PS: I dressed for success thus I wore appropriate atire for a job interview when I met with Melissa. I wanted to make a good impression! My hair was combed, I was clean shaven, wore a pressed shirt, a tie, Docker slacks and had shined shoes! I set the appoitment early in the day thus avoided my clothing looking like I slept in my interview atire!

They are starting to take notice of people having a cert dated before being approved for further processing. BE CAREFULL! They started that yesterday.

Just curious, is this an issue for renewals, too?
