I Was told by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department they do not give ccw permits unless you deal with large amounts of money or are in law enforcement, or a rural farmer, they do not issue permits for self protection to the normal public.
The Sheriff did go on to tell me that I could have a gun at home, but since I do Live in Stockton, leaving the weapon at home defeats the purpose of requsting a ccw for self protection in the city and county streets. Has anyone else had similar responses from the San Joaquin Co Sheriff's Dept.http://www.calccw.com/Forums/images/...extra/rant.gif |

That's not an unusual standard. Frequently they will consider valuable merchandise to be the same as money - something that makes you more of a target for robbery than they ordinary person on the street.
Did you get any indication of what they consider to be a "large" amount of money? $100's or $1000's? Last edited by Bombard : 02-10-2008 at 10:15 AM. |

Hi, I am currently going through the process of obtaining my ccw in San Joaquin county. I am corious who you spoke to. |

My first CCW as issued by San Joaquin County.
Yes, it was a struggle, but it happened. Even from the very beginneing, I was just completely honest with everyone, to the point of painfully so. I was honest to the point that you would think it would have harmed me! When I began the process, I even told the deputy interviewing me that I carry anyway, I just want to make it legal! He laughed! Since I work alone at odd hours in rural areas I fealt that my safety was at greater risk than the general public, and said so. One deputy agreed with me and even helped me write my cause! All in all, I think it took about 6 months to complete. As per the site rules, I will not share my cause here, but I can tell you that if you contact deputy Chief Wilbon at Stockton P.D., he can help you with your cause statement based on what you tell him in answer to his questions. He is very helpful. As for the new Chief, I have no idea. I am interested in what transpires! |

Alternatively, you might seriously consider relocating... even if in increases your commute. Time lost commuting can be compensated by safely extending your lifetime.

$200.00 non refundable, that is a rip off.
![]() In Fresno they did not charge me until I was approved and getting my finger prints done and the cost then (3 years ago) was $117.00. They had on the application instructions a break out shown where the $117 went in the process. Perhaps ask for an itemization showing where all this money goes.

Well, EM2, you are in fro a shock. I paid $210 to Fresno County Sheriff in August this year for my CCW. Add $75 for class at the range, and several hundred $$ for bullets to qualify( you must qualify with each weapon), probably $500 to get CCW, and must do it again in 2 years.
I am not complaining, just the fact. I still consider it a privelege to CCW in Fresno county. (Yea Sheriff Mims) Roger ![]() ![]() |

![]() The requal class I took a few months ago was like $65 and we only had to shoot 12 rounds at 3 different distances and I used practice ammo so it wasn't expensive at all. If I remember correctly my renewal cost to the county was around $70 or so. Oh, and by the way I do not consider it a 'privilege’ to get a CCW permit but rather a necessary evil. You see how I see it is that to carry a weapon is a right and this right is not given by our constitution but more accurately a restriction upon the government and an affirmation of the already existing right. I do however understand that in California this is considered a privilege and in order to comply with the law (albeit arguably an immoral and illegal one) that I MUST be issued a CCW in order to exercise this ‘right’. ![]()
